Stites, Wilson Finish Strong as Titans Tie for Fifth at Itani Quality Homes Collegiate

PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshman Ty Stites and sophomore Matt Wilson were outstanding on Tuesday afternoon, combining to shoot 7-under to lead the Titans to a tie for fifth place at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate hosted by Washington State at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.

Stites paced the Titans on Tuesday as he carded a 4-under 67 in the final round and concluding the tournament with a 1-over 214. He finished in a tie for 12th place to record his first career top-20 finish. The Sallisaw, Okla. native recorded seven birdies in the third round including five on the back nine. Stites also capitalized on the shorter holes of the course, shooting 3-under on Par-3's on Tuesday.

Wilson was nearly as good as his freshman counterpart in the final round as he posted a 3-under 68 to record an overall score of 215, 2-over for the tournament. Wilson finished in a tie for 14th place for his sixth career top-20 finish. Wilson was steady throughout the course in round three, recording 16 pars on the day and never recorded a bogey. He birdied the 455-yard par-4 No. 12, one of just nine birdies on the day on that particular hole. Wilson highlighted his day with an eagle on the 551-yard par-5 No. 18.

Both players finished behind medalist Nick Mandell of Washington State, who posted a 54-hole score of 210, 3-under for the tournament. He edged Ethan Atherstone of Idaho and fellow Cougars golfer Derek Bayley by one stroke.

On the team side, the Titans placed in a tie for fifth place after posting a collective 2-under 282 on Tuesday. It was the fourth best score of the third round in the 14-team field and was also tied for the 20th lowest single-round score in program history. The Titans tied with British Columbia as each team recorded a 17-over 869, which is the 18th lowest 54-hole total in program history and the first time ever the Titans have finished a tournament with a score of 869.

Washington State ran away with the top spot in the team standings, posting a collective 10-under 842 for the tournament, 19 strokes ahead of second-place Utah.

Mark Cobey finished tied for 36th place after carding a 2-over 73 on Tuesday to finish the 54 holes with a 7-over 220. Michael Sharkey rounded out the Titans team scoring as he shot a 4-over 75 in round three to finish tied for 55th with a 12-over 225.

Martin Manalo wrapped up the tournament with a 3-over 74 in the final round to finish tied for 62nd place with a 15-over 228.

Fullerton will return to the links on Oct. 17-18 when they head to the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by CSUN at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
