Titans Stable in First After Day Two in Quest for Championship

SAN JACINTO, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its second day of competition in first place in the Big West Championships at the Soboba Springs Country Club on Monday afternoon. Fullerton's Mark Anguiano continues to set the pace for the Titans on the individual leaderboard concluding the day tied for second place.

 

While shooting a 1-under-par 287 first round, the Titans held on to the lead in the team standings after chalking up a second round 3-over-par 291 to conclude the day with a total score of (+2, 578). Heading into the final 18 holes, Fullerton is currently two strokes in the lead over UC Davis, who claimed the 2011 and 2012 titles.

 

After day two, the Titans continue to lead UC Davis (+4, 580), UC Riverside (+10, 586), Long Beach State (+11, 587) and UC Irvine (+12, 588) to round out the top-five. Fullerton is the only Big West team to currently place all five participants in the top-20 on the individual leaderboard.

 

With a total score of 68 (-4) through the first round, senior Anguiano followed up with a second round 1-over-par 73 to conclude day two in second place with a mark of (-3, 141). The Whittier, Calif., native trails Matt Hansen of UC Davis by five strokes as the Aggie shot a 3-under-par 69 second round, en route to a total score of (-8, 136).

 

Fellow senior Corey Gard showed the most improvement after the first day of play shooting a team-best second round of 70 (-2), four-strokes better than his first round mark of 74 (+2). Gard advanced six slots in the standings to finish tied for ninth place, totaling two rounds of play with an even-par 144.

 

Junior Ryan Tetrault followed yesterday's first round score of 72 (E), with a second round 75 (+3) to produce an overall score of 3-over-par 147, dropping seven slots into a tie for 14th place.

 

Continuing team competition for the second time in the spring as a member of the five-man rotation, senior Scott Rubzin chipped in a second round 1-over-par 73 after a first round 2-over-par 74. Rubzin finished tied with teammate Tetrault for 14th place, while posting a combined score of (+3, 147).

 

Freshman Kyle De Silva followed his first round score of 1-over-par 73 with a 76 (+4) in the second round, capping his day two total score at 5-over-par 149 to finish tied for 19th place to round out the Titans.

 

Fullerton will compete in the final 18 holes of the Big West Championships tomorrow at the Soboba Springs Country Club, a par 72, at 7:30 a.m.



Post Season Notes:
The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I men's regionals which are held at six sites - Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala.), Lonnie Pool Golf Course (Raleigh, N.C.), The Club at Old Hawthorne (Columbia, Mo.), Briggs Ranch Golf Club (San Antonio, Texas), Eugene Country Clun (Eugene, Ore.), Rich Harvest Farms (Sugar Grove, Ill.).  The six-day NCAA Men's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Selections for the regionals is slated for Monday, May 5 at 7:00 a.m. (PDT) on the Golf Channel.
