Titans Look to Defend Crown at Big West Championships


FULLERTON, Calif.--
After concluding the spring finishing second at the El Macero Classic in El Macero, Calif., last weekend, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team returns to the links and heads to San Jacinto, Calif., to participate in the Big West Championships as one of nine teams competing in the three-day tournament on Apr. 27-29. Fullerton looks to defend its crown after clinching a share of its first team title with Pacific at the 2012-13 event. 

 

THE COURSE: The three-day event will be contested at the Soboba Country Club, playing at 7,137 yards from the tournament tees for the 54-hole event. With all days set for a tee-off at 7:30 a.m., play begins on Friday for the first round, continuing on Saturday for the second round, and will conclude Sunday for the final 18 holes. There are four par-5's, 10 par-4's and four par-3's that make up the par-72 course.

 

THE FIELD: Competing alongside the Titans will be Big West foes, Cal Poly, CSU Northridge, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara.

IN THE RANKINGS: Cal State Fullerton is ranked No. 57 in the nation according to the Golfstat.com NCAA team rankings, facing a field that features all other competing teams ranked lower than the Titans: UC Davis is No. 62, UC Irvine is No. 106, Cal Poly is No. 112, Long Beach State is No. 121, UC Santa Barbara is No. 138, Hawai'i is No. 163, UC Riverside is No. 169 and CSU Northridge is No. 172.

According to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Fullerton is one of two top-100 ranked teams in the competition rated at No. 66; The rest of the field: UC Davis is No. 56, Long Beach State is No. 111, UC Irvine is No. 117, Cal Poly is No. 131, UC Santa Barbara is No. 142, Hawai'i is No. 162, UC Riverside is No. 171 and CSU Northridge is No. 178.

 

DEFENDING THE CROWN: The Titans will be looking to defend the Big West Championship after earning a share of the title with Pacific last year. With Pacific transitioning out of the Big West, Cal State Fullerton remains the only team with a target on its back after shooting a (293-298-296—887, +23) at the Soboba Springs Country Club in San Jacinto, Calif. Following the reinstatement of the Fullerton golf program in the 2009-10 season, the Titans have chalked up a top-three finish at the Big West Championships in consecutive years after placing in third at the PGA West Mountain Course in La Quinta, Calif., two years prior.

 

WRATH OF THE TITAN: Fullerton senior Mark Anguiano was the only conference golfer from both the men's and women's teams to garner Big West Golfer of the Month honors on multiple occasions, earning the accolade a whopping three times and in consecutive months over the 2013-14 season.

2014 NCAA DIVISION I MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS: The selection show for the Men's Golf Championships will be announced live via the Golf Channel Monday, May 5 from 8 to 9 a.m. PST, during Morning Drive. A LOOK BACK FROM THE EL MACERO: Anguiano finished in second place with an overall score of 212 (-4) to pace the Titans to a second place finish at the El Macero Classic at the El Macero Country Club in El Macero, Calif. on Apr. 18-20, 2014.

The Titans shot 580 (+4) over the first day of play, including a 295 (+7) second round and a score of 292 (+4) on Sunday afternoon in the third round to finish 872 (+8). UC Davis walked away with the victory with a score of 856 (-8), concluding the day as the only team to finish with an overall score under-par while being 16-strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.

The Aggies shot a 294 (+4) final round on Saturday. UC Davis was followed by Cal State Fullerton (872, +8), Grand Canyon (882, +18), Nevada (885, +21) and Sacramento State (886, +22) to round out the top-five. 

Junior Ryan Tetrault (217, +1), improved four slots in the final day to finish the event tied for fourth while leading the team with 13 birdies over the three-day event.

The El Macero Classic was the second consecutive event that two Titans have finished in the top-10 individual standings after Anguiano finished 3rd and Tetrault in 8th at the Desert Shootout on Mar. 20-22 in Goodyear, Ariz. Fullerton also recorded the eighth top-five team finish in 10 events this year.

Fullerton freshman Kyle De Silva concluded the tournament with an overall score of 225 (+9) showing the most improvement in the standing, leaping 21 slots to finish tied for 25th place on the final day of play.

Senior Corey Gard finished tied for 27th with an overall score of 226 (+10). Completing team competition for the first time in the spring as a member of the five-man rotation, fellow senior Scott Rubzin finished tied for 51st place, totaling three days of play with a 15-over-par 231 to round out the Titans.

 

HOME SWEET HOME: Cal State Fullerton excelled both as a team and individually at its host event in City of Industry, Calif., in the Folino Invitational on Feb. 17-18. Seven out of the 11 Titans on the 2013-14 Men's Roster produced their best finishes of the season:

TAP-INS:

• Cal State Fullerton's second place finish at the El Macero Classic was the first time the team placed in the top-three since the Titans hosted the Folino Invitational, garnering first place on Feb. 17-18. 

• Following the El Macero Classic, Fullerton recorded the eighth top-five team finish in 10 events this year.

• Three Titans have taken over 2,000 strokes on the season while still holding a scoring average of under-72 (Gard 2,163; Tetrault 2,119; Anguiano 2,090).

• Even though the Titans posted a solid second place finish at the El Macero Classic, Cal State Fullerton's team ranking continued to drop three spots from No. 54 to No. 57 in the Golfstat.com NCAA team rankings.

• Three Titans own current season scoring averages of below 73.00: (Anguiano- 69.66, Tetrault- 70.63, Gard- 72.10)

• At the El Macero Classic, senior Scott Rubzin competed in the team five-man rotation for the first time this spring, inking a (82-75-74—231, +15) card, good for a tie in 51st place. 

• Fullerton has had 31 under-70 rounds this season led by 15 from Anguiano, and six each from Gard and Tetrault, respectively.

• At the El Macero Classic, Anguiano was the only Titan to shoot a final score of under-par with a four-under-par 212. The Whittier, Calif., native also tied her career-low round after shooting a 65 (-7) in the first round of the event. Anguiano also marked his eighth top-three individual finish of the season.    

• Three Titans make up the top-five in Big West player standings for shooting the lowest rounds of the season (Anguiano- 65, Tetrault- 65, Gard- 66)

• Since Fullerton's reinstatement of Men's Golf for the 2009-10 season, the Titans have improved in their overall finish in every year at the Big West Championships (2010- Ninth Place; 2011- Eight Place; 2012- Third Place; 2013- Tied for First Place)
