FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton track and field finished the second day of competition at Sacramento State University on Friday at the NCAA Division I West Preliminaries. The Titans were represented in four events but were unable to advance any student-athletes to the next round. Competition resumes on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT and Edwin Matthews (men's high jump), Anthony Applequist (men's triple jump) and the men's 4x100-meter relay will compete for CSF.

The top 48 individuals and 24 relay teams qualified for the preliminaries and only the top 12 individuals and eight relay teams advance to Eugene.

Mason Guzman-Sanchez clocked a 110-meter hurdles time of 14.36 (+0.8 wind) and took 30th place overall in the event. He did not advance to the quarterfinal round. The senior won the Big West Championship in the event this year and set a school record with a time of 14.20.

"His first couple hurdles were a little rough but he rallied at the end of the race, it just wasn't quite enough," head coach John Elders said."

Danny Ramirez clocked a 3,000-meter steeplechase time of 9:05.19 and took 37th place overall. He did not advance to Eugene. The redshirt senior earned a runner-up finish in the event at the Big West Championships and had the best season of his career on the track in 2018.

"Danny ran a good race," Elders said. "It was a very fast year in the steeplechase. We're very proud of him and for him to make it to this point after all the injuries he suffered is just awesome."

Corey Gilbert had a toss of 153-6 (46.79m) in the men's discus competition and did not advance to Eugene. The JUCO transfer had a strong season for the Titans as he set a school record in the event (184-0) and earned a third-place finish at the Big West Championships.

"He had a tough day but he will have an opportunity to get back here next year," Elders said.

Thaddeus Smith III was entered in the 200-meter race but was disqualified due to a false start.
