Applequist Wins Triple Jump at Penn Relays

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton track and field wrapped up the weekend split between UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational and the Penn Relays. Anthony Applequist took first place in the triple jump for CSF at the Penn Relays to highlight the day.

At the Penn Relays, Applequist won the triple jump college section with a season-best mark of 51-3.5 (15.63m/+1.1 wind). He has jumped 50 feet or further in five of his six triple jump competitions this season.

Also at Penn, Mason Guzman-Sanchez took ninth place in the finals of the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.27 (+0.3 wind). Guzman-Sanchez qualified for the final after setting a school record on Friday in the preliminary round with a time of 14.20.

In Irvine at the Steve Scott Invitational, Samantha Huerta's time of 2:09.42 was good for fourth place in the women's 800-meter race and Sandra Flores was 1th at 2:14.25. Flores also ran the 1,500-meter race and took eighth place with a time of 4:36.49.

Diego Courbis' season-best time of 53.55 in the 400-meter hurdles was good for fifth place. Blake Rose clocked a time of 14.85 in the 110-meter hurdles to take sixth place overall.

On the men's side, Erick Juarez took 12th place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.48 and Marcel Episonza was right behind him in 12th place at 1:55.67. Danny Ramirez posted a time of 3:52.57 in the 1,500-meter race to earn a seventh-place finish while Jake Smith was 11th at 3:53.82.

The quartet of Alex Perez, Rasaun House, Thomas Medina and Courbis posted a 4x400-meter relay time of 3:21.56 in sixth place.

Ryann Mojica triple jumped 37-3.75 (11.37m/0.0 wind) to take seventh place overall. Sierra Valdivieso had discus toss of 136-8 to finish in 12th place. Jahni Newhauser cleared 6-3.25 (1.91m) to take fourth place in the men's high jump. Ryan Polakiewicz cleared 16-0.75 (4.90m) in the men's pole vault, a personal-best mark that was good for seventh place. Theodore Malepai-Tofaeono took eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-8.25 (13.62m/+2.0 wind).

CSF returns to action next weekend for the Titan Twilight on May 5 and the Big West Conference Championships begin with the decathlon and heptathlon at CSUN on May 4-5.
