FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton kicks off the outdoor track and field season with the squad competing in the Riverside City College, UC Riverside, Pepperdine and CSF Quad Meet on Saturday. For the men's squad, the road to defending their Big West Conference Championship begins on Saturday with both the track and field events commencing at 1 p.m. PT.

"We're really excited as a staff to get things going," head coach John Elders said. "We have high aspirations for our teams. The men are trying to go back-to-back and for the women we feel that they can be an elite team in the conference as well. It's an exciting time and we're ready to get it going."

For the men, Diego Courbis, the reigning Big West Champion in the 400mH, will open up the 2018 season with the 400-meter sprint and also run in the 4x400-meter relay. Fellow hurdler Mason Guzman-Sanchez is set to run in the 100m, 200m and 110mH on Saturday. For 2017, he took eighth place at the conference championships and had the sixth-best time in the league for the season at 14.41.

Luis Matos, who will be competing in the 100m, 200m and 4x100-meter relay, posted the No. 5 and No. 6 times (10.56, 21.54) in the conference last season in those two individual events. Thaddeus Smith will compete in the 400 meters and the 4x100-meter relay. He earned a runner-up finish in the 200 meters last year at the Big West Championships and clocked the second-best time in the league for the season in the event at 21.14.

"This meet is kind of low key for us," Elders said. "We're going to ease into it. We don't want to beat people up right off the bat so some of this is for conditioning and some of it is for getting our feet wet. We're trying to manage the entire season and so we always treat this meet as when the athletes compete outside of their primary events and get used to competing again."

Edwin Matthews, who took third place at last year's conference championships in the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 6-9.5 (2.07m), begins his outdoor season by competing in the 100 meters, long jump and 4x400-meter relay. Dwayne Lee, who took sixth place the conference championships in 2017, will open up the year with the 110mH, pole vault, shot put and the 4x400-meter relay.

On the women's side, Kiana Clay, the runner-up in the 400 meters at the 2017 BWC Championships, will compete in the 200 meters and 800 meters on Saturday.

Naiah Boardingham, the school-record holder (20-3.75, 6.19m) in the long jump, will run the 4x400-meter relay this weekend. Bryn Williamson, who also owns a school record (pole vault, 13-6.25, 4.12m) and is the reigning conference champion, will compete in the pole vault on Saturday. Fellow defending conference champion Laura Hamann, who won her title in the triple jump, begins this season with the 100-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay.

As the 2018 season gets underway, cross country and track and field head coach John Elders enters his 30th season at the helm of each program making him the longest tenured head coach in the history of Cal State Fullerton. Cal State Fullerton won the 2017 Big West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the first conference title in program history.
