- Freshman Naiah Boardingham opened the season with a new long jump record of 5.70 meters at the Lumberjack Team Challenge on Jan. 21.
2016 RECAP: The men's and women's outdoor track and field team saw tremendous success as nine different records were shattered, four Big West titles were earned and eight student-athletes qualified for the West Region Preliminaries in Lawrence, Kan.
India Owens brought home the women's 400-meter in a time of 59.65. Kelsey McKelvey ended her season with a bang tying the school-best mark of 41.26 meters in the javelin throw at the Big West Championships.
On the men's side, the Titans saw huge success as five individuals set new school records. Eli Penick brought home the men's 100-meter dash Big West title and demolished the school record with his time of 10.33, running the fastest time by the conference meet champion since 2003. Thaddeus Smith also made a name for himself as he shattered the previous school record in the 200 meter with his time of 20.92.
Also setting a new school record was Shelby Hernandez Jr., who improved upon his own school record that he set earlier in the season in the 800-meter run, running a time of 1:50.69 at the Big West Championships.
In his first and only season as a Titan, Aneesh Joshi also set a new school record in the 100 meter hurdles in his run on Friday in the prelims of the Big West Championships, running a time of 14.23.
Rounding out the group of individual record-setters was senior Steven Parsons who broke the school record in the hammer throw in his final competition as a Titan, breaking the previous record with his distance of 58.60m.
Both men's relay teams also etched their names in the record books as the 4x100 meter relay team, comprised of Penick, Smith, Darion Zimmerman and Luis Matos, not only set a new school record, but set a new Big West Championships meet record and brought home the Titans' first ever title in the 4x100 meter relay. Almost the exact same group, with Josh Gordon in place of Penick, also set a new school record as the quartet ran a time of 3:09.67, shattering the previously set time of 3:10.46 that was set back in 2002 in the 4x400 meter relay.
UP NEXT: Cal State Fullerton will host the Ben Brown Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, at Titan Track Complex.
LONGEST-TENURED COACH: As the 2017 season gets underway, cross country and track and field head coach John Elders enters his 29th season at the helm of each program making him the longest tenured head coach in the history of Cal State Fullerton.
Elders was tied with former fencing head coach Heizaburo Okawa (1982-2006) and former men's soccer coach Al Mistri (1981-2005) for 25 years of service at Fullerton. The Orange County native is coach of cross country, women's indoor track and field, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.
