Five Titan Athletes Qualify for NCAA West Regionals

FULLERTON, Calif. – Five Cal State Fullerton track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the NCAA announced Thursday.

Titan standouts Ashley Sims, Janaya Shorty, Katie Wilson, Deena Pierce, and Alexandria Stewart will represent Fullerton next Thursday-Saturday (May 29-31) at John McDonnell Field, as they'll go up against the best athletes in the West.

"This is an exciting time for us," said head coach John Elders. "I'm excited for all the individuals and relay team to compete, but im especially excited for Katie and Ashley to qualify as seniors."

Sims qualified for both the 100 and 200-meter dash, thanks to her season best times of 11.76 and 23.91, respectively. The senior sprinter had ran her season-best time in the 100-meter dash last weekend at the Big West Championships and is ranked 68th in the NCAA West Region, while her 200-meter dash (23.91) mark was set on May 3 at the Steve Scott Invitational where she placed fourth.

The Granada Hills, Calif., native competed last year in the 200-meter dash at the West Regionals. After waiting through weather delays, Sims finished sixth in her heat and 42nd overall, running a time of 24.67.

Sims will be joined in the 200-meter dash by freshman Janaya Shorty. The Victorville, Calif., native qualified, thanks to her personal best time of 23.86 last weekend at the Big West Championships. Her time ends up being ranked 64th in the NCAA West Region and the fourth fastest in the Big West.

Senior Katie Wilson will represent the Titans in the women's 400-meter dash. She qualified for the West Regionals after posting a time of 53.64 at the Big West Championships and will enter the competition ranked 36th.

At the 2013 West Regionals, Wilson placed seventh in her respective heat and 40th overall after recording a time of 55.45.

Deena Pierce is set to compete in the 400-meter hurdles for the second consecutive year. At last season's regional she placed fourth in her heat and 42nd overall (1:01.99), while this year she enters the hurdles with a qualifying time of 1:00.09.

The Titans will also compete in the women's 4x100m relay. The Titans qualifying time of 45.22 came at the UC Riverside Invitational on March 28-29 and Sims, Wilson, Shorty, and Stewart will compete for the Titans.
