49ers and Matadors on Tap For Volleyball

Nov. 3, 2008

Fullerton, Calif. - UPCOMING: The Titans' streak of splitting pairs of Big West Conference volleyball series the last three weeks looks on paper like it will reach four occurrences in a row as Fullerton visits first-place Long Beach State (Nov. 4) and hosts last-place Cal State Northridge (Nov. 8) this week.

LAST WEEK: Fullerton ran its winning streak against UC Riverside to eight in a row on Saturday night with a 3-0 sweep of the Highlanders. Jennifer Edmond had 14 kills ad Brittany Moore added 13 for the Titans, who bounced back from a draining 5-set loss to UC Irvine on Thursday night. The Anteaters won the first two sets, lost the next two but then won the deciding frame 15-8. Moore finished with a match high 20 kills in the loss.

VS LONG BEACH STATE: The Titans are 4-52 all-time against Long Beach State and have lost the last 51 consecutive meetings. Their last win against the 49ers came in 1982. Fullerton has not won a single set since 2004 when they grabbed a 33-31 victory in overtime on Sept. 16, 2004. This is the first meeting between the cross-town rivals of the 2008 season.

VS CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE: With a 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of Northridge earlier this year, the Titans improved to 7-20 all-time against the Matadors dating back to 1980. With the win back on Oct. 11, the Titans snapped a five-match losing streak coming into this year.

QUICK HITS:

&\#149; With 33 kills last week, senior Brittany Moore slid into the No. 2 spot all-time in the Cal State Fullerton record books, upping her career totals to 1393 kills. With just seven more kills, Moore will become just the second player in Titan history to connect for 1400 kills in a career. Though it is unlikely, it is not impossible for Moore to become the all-time kills leader. She needs to average 24 kills a match over the last six contests of the year to surpass Susan Herman (1534 kills from 1986-89) in the No. 1 spot.

&\#149; With the five-set loss last Thursday versus UC Irvine, CSF evened their season record at 2-2 in matches that needed the fifth and deciding set.

&\#149; Freshman Andrea Ragan posted back-to-back double-doubles last week collecting 48 assists and 10 digs on Thursday against UC Irvine and 38 Assists and a season best 17 digs on Saturday against UC Riverside.

&\#149; Freshman Jennifer Edmond blasted her season-best 14 kills on Saturday night against UC Riverside to lead all players. She also hit a match-high .286 (players with 10 or more swings).

&\#149; Freshman Andrea Ragan tallied a career-high and a Titan season high 54 assists against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 24 up north. The freshman has started the last 10 matches and has 40-or-more assists in 6 matches and 50-or-more in two.

&\#149; With the win last Saturday (Oct. 24) at the Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, Titan Head Coach Carolyn Zimmerman earned the 85th win of her career, and became the all-time winningest coach in CSF volleyball history. She surpassed Fran Cummings, who had 84 wins over nine seasons between 1980 and 1988. Zimmerman now has a career record of 86-127, good for a .404 winning percentage (also a school record).

&\#149; With a win on Saturday night, the Titans now have six Big West Conference victories. The volleyball program has notched six-or-more conference wins just five times since 1976, with their record seven conference wins coming last year in 2007.

&\#149; The program has notched at least 13 wins in each of the last five season now, the best stretch in the program's history. The next closest run was from 1995 to 1997 where the Titans posted 12, 16 and 12 wins in three straight years.

&\#149; 13 overall victories by the 2008 Titans, ranks them 7th in all-time CSF season wins.

&\#149; Before Oct. 18th's loss to UC Davis, the Titans had not lost a match since 2005 in which they held a two-sets-to-one lead going into set four.

&\#149; Cami Croteau set a career high and tied the second best dig performance ever by a Titan with 35 scoops on Oct. 18 against UC Davis. Croteau matched Vanessa Vella (2004-2006), who tallied 35 twice in her three-year career, and missed the single match record, also held by Vella, by just two digs

&\#149; Sophomore Cami Croteau has already broken into the career Top 10 in Cal State Fullerton history with 882 career-digs in her young career. She now sits at No. 9 all-time.

&\#149; The Titans, for the first-time in their history, cracked the Top 100 in NCAA RPI (Oct. 13) coming in at No. 93. Since then, the Titans have fallen out of the Top 100 and are currently ranked No. 105. The Titans have or will play four teams (Long Beach, Wisconsin, Pepperdine and Cal) that are listed in the NCAA RPI Top 25.

&\#149; Alex Wolnisty's .282 attack percentage is good for 6th among players in the Big West Conference. Her percentage dropped form .287 to .282 within the last week.

&\#149; Brittany Moore jumped a spot to No. 2 in the league in kills per set. She is now averaging 3.67 kills per set and is trailing just Renee Ibekwe of UC Davis (3.74 kps). Moore however, now leads the conference in total kills with 338. She and Ibekwe were tied last week at 305 apiece. Moore has posted double-digits in kills in 20 of the Titans' 26 matches this season.

&\#149; Brittany Moore (10th,, 2.97 dps) and Cami Croteau (2nd, 4.13 dps) both rank in the Big West's Top 10 in digs per set. Croteau leads the conference in total digs with 380.

&\#149; Brittany Moore has 12 double-doubles (kills/digs) in the Titans' 26 matches played to date.

&\#149; Brittany Moore moved up in the Titan record books with her 401st set played. She still ranks 4h all-time in sets played at Cal State Fullerton. She is now just one of four Titans to ever record 400 sets played in a career.

&\#149; Brittany Moore needs just 21 blocks to become the all-time Cal State Fullerton leader in total blocks. With 342 total blocks as a senior, Moore needs to average four blocks over the last six matches of the year to break Stephanie Scofield's (1988-91) record of 363 total blocks. Junior Alex Wolnisty has 253 total blocks, ranking her No. 4 on the all-time Fullerton career list.

&\#149; Brittany Moore (282 block assists, 60 solos) is now tied for No. 2 all-time in career block assists and 4th all-time in solos. Moore sits just five block assists away from tying Alyssa Opeka's record of 287 block assists from 2002-2005. As a junior, Alex Wolnisty already ranks 4th all-time in career block assists (211), and 10th in solos (42).
