Volleyball Clincher Named Finalist for Greatest Sports Moment of 2010

Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Sports Council has selected the Cal State Fullerton volleyball team's first Big West Conference championship and postseason berth on Nov. 19, as one of three finalists for the Greatest Sports Moments of 2010 in the Div. I Schools category of their annual awards show.

Online fan voting will determine this year's winner that will be announced at the L.A. Sports Awards Show on Feb. 24 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The star-studded awards dinner and gala will salute the greatest moments in sports for 2010 in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. The Los Angeles Sports Council will present the event, continuing the Sports Council's tradition of recognizing each year's top sports moments. FSN Prime Ticket will televise this year's event.

You can help the Titans take home the Greatest Sports Moment award, designed by Tiffany & Co., by submitting your vote online at www.lasports.org. Voting will be open from Jan. 10 to Jan. 31, so tell your family and friends to support the Titans by voting before time runs out!

The three finalists for the Greatest Sports Moment of 2010 in the Div. I Schools category are:

Fullerton Wins Big West Title, Qualifies for NCAA's
With a 3-1 road win over UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton secured its first-ever Big West Conference Championship and NCAA tournament berth in women's volleyball. The Titans, led by Coach Carolyn Zimmerman (Big West and AVCA West Region Coach of the Year) and Big West Player of the Year Erin Sadler, went 26-6 overall and 14-2 in conference and cracked the national top 25 rankings for the first time in school history (November 19). The Titans had never finished higher than 5th place in conference play.

UCI's Jock Breaks 32-Year Old Record
UC Irvine's Charles Jock broke 3-time Olympian Steve Scott's 1978 school record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:47.46 at UCLA's Drake Stadium. Jock went on to be named Big West Conference Athlete of the Year (March 28).

UCI Women's Soccer Advances to NCAA Sweet 16
The UC Irvine women's soccer team defeated Wake Forest, 2-0, to qualify for the NCAA Sweet 16 (3rd round of the tournament). It was a first-ever tournament berth for the Anteaters, who also were the first women's soccer team in Big West history to go undefeated and untied in league play, at UC Irvine (November 14).

The "Greatest Moments" event is a fundraiser for the non-profit Los Angeles Sports Council which will utilize the proceeds to further its mission of promoting economic development through sports in Southern California. In addition, the event benefits every major sports organization in the Los Angeles/Orange County area through its portrayal of the best that the year in sports has to offer.
