Strong Team Effort Leads to Upset of First-Place Aggies

Fullerton, Calif. - Three Titans finished with 14-or-more kills and five posted double figures in digs as Cal State Fullerton upset Big West-leading UC Davis 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 28-26) Friday night in a league volleyball match in Titan Gym.

The Titans won their second match in a row for the first time since Oct. 2 and 3 and up their record to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in Big West action. Fullerton wins its 14th match of the year for the sixth straight season, the most proserous stretch of volleyball in school history. The Aggies, who came into Titan Gym in first place in conference by a game, drop to 18-8, 9-3.

Erin Saddler led all players with 23 kills, and paced the Titans to 70 kills as a team, their second highest mark of the season. Freshman Kayla Neto hit .400 and blasted a career-best 19 kills while sophomore Torrie Brown added 14 spikes in the win.

As a team, the Titans outhit the Aggies .204 to .142 despite committing a match-high 31 attack errors.

Betsy Sedlak hit .458 and had a team-high 13 kills for Davis. She was the only Aggie hitter with 10-or-more kills.

The Titans set a season high in digs Friday night scooping 93 kill attempts from the Aggie offense. Cami Croteau delivered a season high 28 digs to lead all players. She was flanked by Deven Bukoski (18 digs), Andrea Ragan (15), Saddler (14), and Ashley Collier (10). UC Davis also had five players in double figures in digs. The visitors were led by Avreeta Singh who scooped up 19.

The Aggies out-blocked the Titans 12.0 to 8.0 led by Katie Denny who had her hand in 6 blocks on the night. Teammates Allison Whitson and Sedlak also provided help at the net with five blocks apiece.

Senior Alex Wolnisty led the Titan squad with five blocks on the night, inching herself up the Fullerton career leader board. She is now 24 block assists away from tying the school record, and 41 blocks away from the all-time mark.

Ragan (51 assists, 15 digs) and Saddler (23 kills, 14 digs) both earned double-doubles in the Titan win.

Fullerton will return to the floor tomorrow night to face the Pacific Tigers at 7 p.m. in Titan Gym.
