Titans Complete Weekend Sweep with Win Over UC Riverside

FULLERTON, Calif. -  Cal State Fullerton completed a weekend sweep at home at Titan Gym after taking down UC Riverside in four sets (21-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-19) on Saturday night. They defeated UC Davis the night before in four sets as well. The Titans move to 8-9 for the season and 5-5 in Big West Conference play.

The Titans hit .274 for the match while holding the Highlanders (5-15, 1-9 BWC) to a .168 hitting percentage. Julia Crawford led the Titans in kills with 16 and picked up her 13th double-double of the season after also recording 21 digs. Makena Ala'ilima-Daley and Gabrielle Barcelos both chipped in with 13 kills a piece. Elizabeth Schuster led the team with 44 assists and also had 16 digs.  Lyla Traylor had 14 digs and Neena Dimas recorded 13 digs. Amarachi Osuji led the Highlanders with 16 kills.

The first set was knotted up in the beginning all the way up to 10-10 before the Highlanders began to pull away. They got 5 straight points to open up a 5-point lead at 15-10 before the Titans eventually tied the match a couple times.  At 21-21, UCR scored four unanswered points to take the first set 25-21. The Highlanders hit .261 during the first set while the Titans hit .140.

In the second set, it was once again close up to the mid-way point of the set. After being knotted up at 10-10, a kill by Crawford gave the Titans the lead that they held for the rest of the set. Fullerton was able to pull away from UCR to take the second set 25-19.

In the third set, the Titans took the lead early at 5-4 on a UCR attacking error. After holding onto a 18-11 lead, UCR got four straight points before the Titans responded with a 7-0 run to close out the third set at 25-15.

The fourth set looked like it was going to play out like the previous set when the Titans took control early of the set with a 7-3 lead. However the Highlanders were able to tie at 13-13 and even take a 14-13 lead. But Fullerton finished out the set on a 12-5 run to take the fourth and final set 25-19.

The Titans hit the road for their next two matches as they head to Cal Poly on Friday, October 29th and CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, October 30th.
