RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton (8-3) ended non-conference play with a reverse sweep (17-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-12) over Penn on Saturday. It is the third reverse sweep of the season for the Titans.
Julia Crawford recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 13 digs. Haley Carmo notched seven kills and more notably, five service aces while Savahna Costello led the team with 18 digs. Makenzi Abelman had 44 assists to go along with six digs and was named to the UCR Classic All-Tournament team.
Fullerton and Penn were evenly matched to start the match, but the Quakers would go on a 7-0 scoring run midway through and hold on for the 25-17 win.
In the second set, the teams were pretty evenly matched but a 37.8% hit percentage would lead to a 25-21 set win for Penn.
Looking to avoid a sweep, the Titans came out strong in the third and fourth sets with 25-19 victories in both to force a fifth and deciding set.
One set away from their third reverse sweep of the season, Fullerton took control early and did not look back coming out with a 15-12 win to take the match.
The Titans finish their non-conference schedule with an 8-3 record, their best mark since 2010.
Fullerton will be back in the SRC Arena to kick off Big West play against UC Riverside on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
