FULLERTON, Calif. – The Titans put together one of their most impressive sets of the season, but unfortunately couldn't string them together, as they fell to CSUN 3-1 (25-23, 9-25, 25-22, 25-13) Thursday evening in the Big West season opener inside Titan Gym.
For Fullerton (4-9, 0-1 BWC), the second set marked its best hitting set of the season, as it recorded its largest margin of victory in any set so far this season. The Titans also hit a match-high .429 for the set.
Summer Kerins produced her third double-digit kill performance of the season, while Shimen Fayad notched her fourth, as each recorded 10 kills. Kerins also led the Titans with 14.5 total points and a career-high equaling five block assists. Madeline Schneider nearly notched a double-double with nine kills and a team best 13 digs.
Nastassja Bowman nearly had herself a double-double as well, as she collected a team-best 32 assists and nine digs.
Things were close throughout from the get go, as Fullerton at one point held a 13-8 advantage in the opening set. The Titans eventually even took a 22-21 lead after a big kill by Kerins, but CSUN edged out a 25-23 opening set win.
However the Titans responded in the second set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back, eventually running away with a 25-9 victory.
With all the momentum on Fullerton's side, it entered third frame with things looking good. It struck for four consecutive scores early to take a 4-1 lead. Late the Titans used a 6-0 run to regain a 14-11 advantage and eventually led 21-20, but couldn't quite hang on. CSUN captured the third set 25-22.
The Matadors then had all the momentum they needed, as they finished off the Titans with a 25-13 fourth set win.
Fullerton is back in action Friday at Cal Poly. First serve is at 7 pm PT.
