Gauchos' Efficiency Bests Titans

Santa Barbara, Calif. -- Committing only eight errors on the night, UC Santa Barbara beat Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, in Big West volleyball action.

With the win the Gauchos improve to 16-9, 11-2 while the Titans fall to 10-16, 3-11 heading into their final road match of the season at Cal Poly.

Santa Barbara's Hanna Nielson and Ali Santi combined for 34 assists as the pair dished consistently to all areas of the floor. Katey Thompson and Ali Spindt finished with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, to lead the league-leading team. Thompson committed only one error on the night to finish with a .435 attack efficiency mark and delivered four service aces, all in the first set. 

For the Titans, Bre Moreland had another double-double performance, her fifth consecutive, finishing with 13 kills and 12 digs. Holland Crenshaw and Alyse Hensley each added seven kills in the three frames. Mallory Waggoner gave the offense a shot in the arm in the third set when she put away six kills.

Defensively, Fullerton got a strong performance from Paige Reed (who wore the number 25 during the match) who led the team with 15 digs. Julie Consani, the Big West leader in assists per set, finished with 36 on the night.

The Gaucho front line out-blocked the Titans, 16-6, contributing to Fullerton's woes.

But, ultimately, the Titans committed 22 errors to the Gauchos' eight and wound up hitting for only an overall mark of .184 on a night with Santa Barbara finished at a .303 clip.

The Titans next head north for their final road contest of the 2013 season, at Cal Poly tomorrow night. The team will return for their final match following the Thanksgiving break on Saturday, Nov. 30, when they play host to No. 12 Hawai'i on senior night in Titan Gym.
