Titans Fall to Gauchos to End Homestand

Fullerton, Calif. - Gaucho hitter Ali Barbeau racked up 18 kills and hit .455 to lead visiting UC Santa Barbara (12-8, 7-1) to a 3-set sweep over Cal State Fullerton (9-11, 2-6) in Big West Conference volleyball action Saturday night in Titan Gym.

With the loss, the Titans drop their fourth in a row for the first time this season. The victory moved the Gauchos into a tie for first place with Cal State Northridge.

Barbeau was one of three Gauchos in double-figures in kills in the 25-20, 27-27, 25-18 victory. Katey Thompson had 12 kills and Ali Spindt added a double-double of 15 kills and 15 digs. Santa Barbara hit .341 as a team while holding Fullerton to just a .196 clip.

For the second straight night, Alyse Hensley led the Titan offense, providing 16 kills in 47 swings. Hensley also had seven digs and a service ace. Freshman Faith Rockmore added eight kills (.333) and Holland Crenshaw had seven to flank Hensley effort.

Defensively, the Gauchos out-blocked (13.0 -2.0) and out-dug (73-59) the Titans as a team. Allie Sullberg had a seven blocks to pace the floor for Santa Barbara. Fullerton had just four block assists as a team.

Leah Sully had a solid defensive performance, scooping up 27 Fullerton attack attempts.Fullerton did out-serve Santa Barbara, 5-1, with Bre Moreland landing two aces to lead all players.

Fullerton has a pair of games this coming week. The Titans will travel to first place Cal State Northridge on Halloween (7 p.m.) and then to UC Davis on Nov. 2 (Noon).

NOTES: The Titans four-match losing streak is the first streak of four games in 2013 and the longest since losin six consecutive contests from Sept. 14 to Sept. 28, 2012… The Titans have beat the Gauchos in eight of the last 14 matches, but have dropped three of their last four meetings.
