Titans Drop Big West Opener

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Northridge rebounded from dropping the first set to win the next three as the Matadors defeated Cal State Fullerton, 3-1 (21-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-21) on Friday night at Titan Gym.

After losing the first set, the Matadors (10-4, 1-1) held the Titans to 47 points in the next three games.

Fullerton (6-8, 0-1) opened Big West play with a loss, and it will not get easier for the Titans as seventh-ranked Hawai'i will visit Titan Gym at 7 p.m., Saturday night.

Bre Moreland recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season with a match-high 17 kills and 13 digs, while Kayla Neto posted her fifth double-double of 2012 with 13 kills and 11 digs.

The Matadors attacked at a clip of .256 for the match, while limiting CSF to a .108 hitting percentage as the Titans committed 26 errors and CSUN totaled a match-high 13 blocks.

Three Matador attackers led Northridge with double-digit kills led by Britney Graff's double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs. Mahina Haina added 14 kills, while Casey Hinger dropped in 13 kills.

Sydney Gedryn guided the Matador offense with 42 assists, while Cal State Fullerton's Kaylynne Taeatafa saw her first action since Aug. 25, and led the Titans with 32 assists. A native of Spring Valley, Calif., she recorded her first double-double of the year by adding 14 digs.

Gabrielle Dewberry led the Titans with 16 digs, while Leah Best totaled a team-high four block assists.

Cal State Fullerton will next host seventh-ranked Hawai'i at 7 p.m., Saturday at Titan Gym. It will be Mascot Night at Titan Gym, and fans can meet their favorite pachyderm, Tuffy the Titan. 

Notes: Cal State Fullerton opened Big West Conference play against Cal State Northridge for the first time since suffering a five-set loss in 2001…Cal State Northridge leads the all-time series vs. the Titans 24-11, and CSUN has now defeated CSF in the teams' last three meetings…CSF has dropped its last four matches.
