Long Beach State Sweeps Titles at Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Tournament

Oct. 8, 2007

FULLERTON, CA - Long Beach State's Hannah Grady defeated Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock for the singles championship and later combined with teammate Stephanie Bengson to bring home the doubles title to close out the 2007 Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The 49ers became the first school to sweep both titles since UC Santa Barbara accomplished the feat in 2004 and Grady became the first Long Beach State singles champion in the tournament since Anastasia Dvornikova in 2001.

Grady and Blalock both advanced to the tournament final after defeating teammates Deborah Armstrong (6-2, 6-1) and Steffi Wong (6-0, 6-0), respectively.

Grady then took home the title with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-1, victory, denying Blalock a second-consecutive championship after she won the title here in 2006.

A few hours later, the two would meet once again, this time with partners at their sides in the doubles championship, where Grady and Bengson would post an 8-2 win over Blalock and Wong.

Grady and Bengson became the first doubles champion at the Fall Intercollegiates from Long Beach State since Katy Williams and Sandra Rocha took home honors in 2005.
