FULLERTON, CA - Long Beach State's top-seeded singles player Katy Williams and Pepperdine's top-seeded doubles team of Tania Rice and Anete Bandere advanced to Sunday's semifinal action as day two came to a close at the 2006 Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Titan Courts.
Williams and Pepperdine's Jill Braverman, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, are the only two seeded singles players still alive as three seeds lost in the third round and two more were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Williams led Cal State Northridge's Kristy Fournell in the second set, 6-5, but trailed one set to love before Fournell retired. Williams then defeated Cal Poly's Shannon Brady, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the semis.
Williams will meet another Mustang in Brittany Blalock at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning for the right to advance to the 12 p.m. championship match.
Braverman, defeated Cal Poly's Steffi Wong in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, and then advanced to the semis by default over Northridge's Kanykey Koichumanova. Braverman will meet Long Beach State's Jessica Weeks in Sunday's other semifinal.
In doubles play, the Waves' Rice and Bandere posted a pair of easy wins to move into the semis, downing Liege Vieira and Lisa Shih of UC Irvine, 8-0, and the team of Devin Peek of Cal Poly and Katie Barth of UC Irvine, 8-2.
Rice and Bandere will meet the USC duo of Amber Harper and Katcha Decker-Sadowski in Sunday's 11:30 a.m. semifinal.
A pair of seeded teams make up the other semi as Cal State Northridge's Silvia Gutierrez and Kanykey Koichumanova, seeded No. 4, will meet Cal Poly's third-seeded duo of Carol Erickson and Steffi Wong.
The doubles championship match will be held at approximately 1 p.m.
