Cal State Fullerton junior Monica Rodriguez advanced to the third round of the singles main draw and joined teammate Malorie dela Cruz to post a first-round doubles win to highlight the Titans' day one efforts at the 2011 Fall Intercollegiate Tournament at the Titan Courts on Friday.

Rodriguez, the only Fullerton singles player still alive in the main draw, waited out a first-round bye before defeating Portland State's Marina Todd in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1. She will take on Long Beach State's Ania Jeczmoinka, also a straight-set winner following a first-round bye, on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.

In doubles play, the Rodriguez-dela Cruz duo posted an 8-5 win over Thanh Doan and Kate Bergeson to advance to the second round against the 49ers' Julie Luzar and Sarah Cantlay at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

It was a good day for Titan doubles as all four teams are still alive in second round action. Freshmen Jessica Pepa and Kalika Slevcove posted an 8-0 shutout of Portland State's Todd and Emily McClaran while the other freshman pairing of Devyn Billingsley and Avriel Tomaiko advanced via default. The other pairing of Morgan McIntosh and Tiffany Mai had a first-round bye and will play their first match together on Saturday morning.

In other singles action, Slevcove was the only other Titan to post a victory on day one, winning her first round match, 6-4, 6-2, over Portland State's Audrionna Farr before falling to UC Irvine's Marivick Mamiit, 6-1, 6-4.

Day two action begins with doubles play at 8 a.m. with singles play continuing at 9:30 a.m.

Complete results from day one are posted in the PDF above.
