STOCKTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton jumped out to an early lead with a doubles point victory, but host Pacific responded with a sweep of singles play, lifting the Tigers to a 6-1 win over the Titans on Sunday afternoon in Stockton, Calif.
Fullerton fell to 7-12 overall and 1-7 in Big West Conference play for eighth place heading into the league championships next week. Pacific improved to 5-14 overall and 2-6 in league play for seventh place.
For the first time since mid-March, the Titans laid claim to the doubles point as the team of Tiffany Mai and Morgan McIntosh clinched the win with an, 8-6, victory over the Tigers' senior duo of Julia Hansen and Summer Irvin. Fullerton's Kalika Slevcove and Monica Rodriguez also posted a doubles victory, handing Gergana Boncheva and Iveta Masarova an, 8-6, defeat.
The match turned in Pacific's favor in singles play, however, as the Tigers won five of the six contests in straight sets. Only Monica Rodriguez was able to extend her match, rebounding from a 6-2 loss in the opening set against Susan Te with a 6-4 win in set No. 2 before falling 10-6 in a tiebreaker with the match in hand for Pacific.
For the fifth-straight season Cal State Fullerton and ninth-seeded UC Riverside will meet in a play-in match at the 2012 Big West Conference Tournament on Thursday (April 26) at 3 p.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The winner will advance to meet top-seeded Long Beach State on Friday (April 27) at 8 a.m.
