FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton opens the 2018 spring season at home against UC San Diego on Wednesday at 1:30pm PT out at the Titan Tennis Courts.
After competing in a total of 7 tournaments this fall and hosting the CSUF Spring Invite last weekend, the Titans are ready to start their 2018-19 dual matches.
HISTORY
The teams have met 17 times in program history, with the last five meetings being victories at home against the Tritons. The Titans own a 10-1 all-time record playing against them.
Fullerton's lone loss to the Tritons came on Feb. 1, 1992 in a 5-4 defeat. Fullerton went 0-21 that season.
The team already faced the Tritons last year for their first match of the season and blanked their opponent 7-0. It has been four years in a row that the Titans won their season-opener.
OPPONENT
UC San Diego is ranked No. 18 in the ITA DII National Rankings.
The Tritons, future Big West opponent of the Titans just dropped their first exhibition match of the season 5-2 against University of Nevada last Friday.
TITANS ON THE ROLL
The Titans have had record-breaking seasons three years in a row now and reached the Big West Finals for the first time ever last season. The team ended the 2018 campaign with a total of 20 wins and only 6 losses. The team had a strong season at home with a 10-1 record.
Genevieve Zeidan was named Big West Freshman of the Year and on the Singles First Team. Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin were named on both the Singles and Doubles Big West First Team.
NEW FACES
The Titans welcomed two new players last fall. Eira Tobrand transferred from Southern Utah University and Petra Such from Cerritos College.
ABOUT DIANNE MATIAS
Matias entered her 6th year coaching Fullerton and owns a 74-43 record with the Titans. She took the program to new heights producing record-breaking seasons. She helped the team reach their first ever Big West Finals match last season as the Titans went 20-6.
