FULLERTON, Calif. --- For the third straight season, Cal State Fullerton opened the year with a victory as the Titans defeated visiting Nevada, 5-2, on Saturday at Titan Tennis Courts.
Fullerton started the match by winning the doubles point as the No. 1 team of Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela clinched the point with a 6-3 victory over Blaga Delic and Sheila Morales. Fullerton's No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin defeated Nevada's Milena Achlamov and Adriana Gergelyova, 6-2, to win the first doubles match of the day.
With a 1-0 lead, Portalatin put the Titans ahead 2-0 with 6-3, 6-4 win over Delic at the No. 4 spot.
Fullerton went on to take a 3-0 advantage as Maskao Makiba edged Achlamov, 7-6(2), 7-5, in the fifth spot of the order.
Nevada responded as 73rd-ranked Sheila Morales came back to defeat Sarah Nuno in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 in the lineup.
But Nevada would get no closer as De Leon came from behind to clinch Fullerton's fourth point with a, 6-7(9), 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gergelyova.
Valenzuela upset 66th-ranked Herrero 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to score Fullerton's fifth and final point.
The Titans return to action at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, hosting UC San Diego at Titan Tennis Courts.
NOTES: Dating back to 1981, Cal State Fullerton boasts a record of 10-24 in season openers (records are missing for 1983, 1997 and 2000). The Titans are 7-10 at home in season and Fullerton has won its last three season openers…Nevada leads all-time series 4-2.
