SAN DIEGO - Two victories on Saturday ushered the Cal State Fullerton women's tennis doubles team of Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela into the semifinals of the ITA West Regional at Barnes Tennis Center.
Rated 31st in the 2016-17 Oracle ITA Division I Women's National Doubles Preseason Rankings, De Leon and Valenzuela are the third-seeded team at the Regional, and will play the top seed from UC Santa Barbara, the team of Palina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic, in the semifinal. The Gaucho pair was also ranked eighth in the preseason.
De Leon and Valenzuela defeated Alzbeta Houbova and Klara Pribylova of Hawai'i, 8-3, in the round of 16, before edging another Rainbow Wahine squad, Petra Melounova and Cindy Nguyen, 8-6, in the quarterfinal.
In extra matches, the doubles team of Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin defeated Long Beach State's Maren Helgo and Natalia Munoz, 8-6.
While in extra singles play, Nuno needed three sets to dispatch San Diego's Daniela Morales, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9.
Sophomore Masako Makiba also came back from a first-set deficit to score a win over CSUN's Kristen Poei, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6.
