Valenzuela Named Big West Athlete of the Week

Big West Release

IRVINE, Calif. – Junior Alexis Valenzuela was voted the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after finishing last week a combined 3-0, winning two singles matches at the top of the order as well as a doubles upset of then 15th-ranked Palina Dubavets and Stefani Stojic of UC Santa Barbara.

Valenzuela (West Covina, Calif./West Covina HS) helped Cal State Fullerton notch a program record sixth conference win in garnering Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades for the second time this season and the third occasion in her career.

Valenzuela won both of her singles matches and her lone doubles contest, teaming with Camille De Leon and toppling the nation's 15th-ranked doubles squad, Dubavets and Stojic of UCSB, by a 6-1 score.

De Leon and Valenzuela broke into the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Women's Doubles Rankings at No. 45 on Tuesday.

Valenzuela recorded one of the two Titan points in the 5-2 loss to UCSB, rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lou Adler at No. 1 singles.

In a 4-0 shutout of Cal Poly, Valenzuela delivered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zoe Oedekerk, which helped CSF improve to 6-0 in Big West play and set the program record for league victories.

Valenzuela, at 16-3 in singles overall, has the most wins by a Titan prior to 2001 (first record of individual stats).

It is the fourth time in 2016 that a Titan has won the Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week award.

Currently tied with UC Santa Barbara for second in the Big West Conference standings, Cal State Fullerton (17-4, 6-1 BWC) concludes the regular season at league-leading Long Beach State (15-4, 7-0) on Friday.

Others nominated: Molly Reed (Cal Poly); Ebba Unden (Long Beach State); Vivien Dvali (UC Irvine); Natalie Da Silveira (UC Santa Barbara); Cindy Nguyen (Hawai'i)
