FULLERTON, Calif. – The winning streak for the Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team was extended to seven matches on Thursday as the Titans upset 56th-ranked Hawai'i, 4-2, at Titan Tennis Courts.
With the victory, Fullerton (9-1, 3-0 BWC) remains undefeated in Big West Conference play and at the top of the league standings. It is the first time the Titans have opened league play with three straight wins on record dating back to 1981.
For the ninth time this season, the Titans clinched the doubles point as the undefeated team of juniors and co-captains Camille De Leaon and Alexis Valenzuela improved to 7-0 on the year with a 6-4 victory over Sarah Gealer and Klara Pribylova.
Freshman Sarah Nuno and sophomore Danielle Pham defeated Marina Hruba and Paulina Petriskova, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles to seal the point for the Titans.
With the match tied at 1-1 after UH's Roxanne Resma picked up a win at No. 5 in the order, Valenzuela gave Fullerton the advantage again, 2-1, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hruba at the top of the lineup. Valenzuela is on a three-match win streak and is now 8-2 on the year.
De Leon the put the Titans ahead 3-1 with her third straight singles win as she edged Gealer, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 in the lineup.
Now 7-3 on the season, Karla Portalatin defeated Pribylova, 6-4, 7-5, to score the match-winning fourth point.
The Titans return to action at 1:30 p.m., Monday, hosting Utah State at Titan Tennis Courts. Admission is free of charge.
Notes: The Titans seven-match winning streak is its longest on record dating back to 1981…Fullerton's 3-0 start in conference play is its best on record dating back to 1981.
