Fullerton Hosts Defending Champs Thursday

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team has just one match on tap this week, hosting defending Big West regular season champion UC Irvine at the Titan Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon.

UC Irvine Connections

Cal State Fullerton will return to Big West Conference play on Thursday, hosting the defending Big West regular season champion UC Irvine Anteaters at the Titan Tennis Courts at 1:30 p.m.

First-year Cal State Fullerton head coach Dianne Matias served as an assistant coach for UCI in 2013 before accepting a head coaching position with the Titans. In 2013, the Anteaters notched their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a 4-2 win over San Jose State.  The squad finished the year ranked 33rd in the nation, clinched the Big West regular season championship, and also boasted the league player of the year in Kristina Smith.

Fullerton News & Notes

Cal State Fullerton (1-5, 0-2 Big West) has lost four matches in a row, and the Titans have yet to record a league victory in 2014.

The Titans have a pair of freshman in the singles lineup as rookie Camille De Leon leads her teammates with a record of 4-2 competing in the No. 3 position.

Fellow freshman Alexis Valenzuela holds a dual record of 3-3, competing the majority of the time at the No. 2 spot. The native is West Covina, Calif., is also on a two-match win streak.

In doubles play, the team of Valenzuela and junior Kalika Slevcove leads Fullerton with a record of 4-2 competing at No. 2.

Opponents

UC Irvine (2-3, 0-0 Big West) will open Big West Conference play in Fullerton on Thursday. The Anteaters have recorded wins over San Diego and San Diego State, but have suffered losses to No. 30 TCU, No. 5 UCLA and No. 44 Pepperdine.

Sarah Stadfelt leads the Anteaters with a 3-1 record in singles play.

Dating back to 2001, the Titans have not defeated UC Irvine in 13 meetings.
