Fifth Consecutive NCAA Trip Caps Season

June 3, 2009

Fullerton, Calif. - The 2009 Titan softball team enjoyed a typically successful season. The Titans finished with a 30-21 record and earned the program's fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth with a regular season mark of 29-19 including 17-4 for second place in the Big West Conference, one game behind Cal Poly SLO. Fullerton was sent to the NCAA Regional at Tempe where the host Sun Devils, the defending national champions, eliminated the Titans and eventually advanced to the Women's College World Series. The Titans earlier lost to LSU and defeated San Diego State.

Fullerton now has gone to post-season play in 26 of the program's 30 years of existence.

First-team All-Big West honors went to catcher Lauren Lupinetti, pitcher Ari Cervantes and outfielder Torrie Anderson. Shortstop Courtney Martinez made second team and freshmen Krystal Heinle (pitcher) and Francesca Gonzales (third base) earned honorable mention.

Gonzales and Anderson led the offense, which produced 46 home runs to the opposition's 23. Gonzales had the highest batting average at .297 with 10 home runs and 24 RBI. Anderson led the way in homers with 11 while driving in 35 runs and batting .284. Lupinetti hit .260 with 6 homers and 23 RBI. Cervantes pitched about two-thirds of the team's innings and was a 20-game winner at 20-11 with a 2.23 earned run average. She completed 28 of her 29 starts.
