FULLERTON, CA - The Cal State Fullerton softball team has added three more players for the 2007 season, signing high schoolers Gabby Smith and Michelle Williams to National Letters of Intent and adding transfer Amanda Fernandez from 2006 California Junior College State Champion Cypress College.
The three players join previously announced signee Shelia Holguin (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS), who signed a National Letter of Intent with the Titans in December, 2005.
A two-time All-Orange Empire Conference selection, catcher/utility player Amanda Fernandez (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada HS) hit .363 for the State Champion Chargers with 51 runs scored and 42 RBI in her sophomore season, leading the team with 17 doubles (which is good for second on the single-season list) and slugged .535 for the year while helping Cypress College to a 53-5 overall record and a 17-1 conference mark. As a freshman, Fernandez hit .369 for the Chargers (.413 against OEC opponents) with eight doubles, 35 runs scored, and 25 RBI.
Fernandez, a 2006 JC All-American, was twice named all-state and was inducted into the Cypress College Hall of Fame.
Smith (Fontana, Calif./Fontana HS) was a dual threat for the Steelers as a senior, hitting .378 with 22 RBI while also going 18-4 in the circle with a 1.32 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 149 innings pitched. She is a two-time Citrus Belt League MVP and has been named to the All-CIF Second Team three times. She has helped the Steelers to three CBL titles and was named All-San Bernardino County three times. She played travel ball for Minors Gold.
Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS), a 5-7 catcher/outfielder from California's Central Valley, helped lead the Knights to an 18-11 overall record and a 7-1 County/Metro League mark in 2006 to share the regular season title. She earned first-team all-league honors as a junior in 2005 and was named to the honorable mention squad as a sophomore in 2004. She played travel ball for the Fresno Force.
