FULLERTON, CA - UC Davis's Elizabeth Santana finished 6-for-8 at the plate and reached base in seven of her nine plate appearances on the afternoon to help power the visiting Aggies to a doubleheader sweep of host Cal State Fullerton by the scores of 5-2 and 7-4 on Saturday at Anderson Family Field.
The losses extended the Titans' losing streak to six consecutive games and dropped them to 9-34 overall and 4-7 in Big West Conference play. The two victories improved UC Davis to 18-24 overall on the season and 7-3 in league play.
Santana finished 4-for-4 in the opener with two runs scored and a double and was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two. Alex Holmes also finished with multiple hits in both ends of the doubleheader, finishing 2-for-4 in both contests, as did Kylie Fan, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one and 2-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap.
Freshman Gabby Aragon led the way offensively for the Titans, finishing 4-for-7 on the afternoon with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Kadie Baldwin was 2-for-2 in the opener while junior Torrie Anderson finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in game two.
In the opener, three straight RBI hits in the third inning started the scoring for the Aggies, racing them out to the early lead. Holmes, Sarah Axelson, and Fan each drove home runs in the frame, staking Dana Waldusky (7-12) to the early lead.
UC Davis added two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Jessica Gonzalez and an error in the outfield for the 5-0 advantage, more than enough for Waldusky, who allowed just two runs on seven hits before giving way to Holmes in the seventh.
The Titans tried to climb back into the contest in their half of the fifth as Sheila Holguin had a sacrifice fly and Krystal Heinle added an RBI single, but was thrown out trying to take an extra base to end any further threat.
Holmes then shut the door for her first save of the season after Waldusky gave up two hits to lead-off the inning. She got two quick outs on a fly-out double play and then got a ground ball to end the game.
Junior Ari Cervantes (4-17) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in three innings. She was the first of three pitchers as Heinle allowed two runs on four hits in two innings while freshman Aly Fascetti scattered three hits in two innings of relief.
In the nightcap, UC Davis sent 10 batters to the plate as part of a five-run sixth inning to erase a two-run deficit and lift the Aggies to the doubleheader sweep.
After a groundout to lead-off the decisive inning, UC Davis had eight straight batters reach base as four different players drove home runs to give the Aggies the 6-3 lead after the Titans got RBI's from Aragon (RBI triple) and Heinle (RBI double) to break the 1-1 tie and take their first lead of the afternoon.
Now trailing by three, Fullerton attempted to rally back in its half of the sixth, but could not take advantage of five straight singles, plating only one run while having a pair of runners thrown at the plate to squash any momentum.
Kadie Baldwin, Holguin, and Sarah Hahn each singled to lead-off the inning and load the bases. Ariel Tsuchiyama followed with a single to center to score Baldwin and make it 6-4, but Marissa Araujo cut down Holguin at the plate for the first out. Torrie Anderson then following with a single, but Araujo's throw was on the mark once again, catching Sammie Dabbs trying to score after she hesitated at third base for the second out.
Waldusky, who entered in relief earlier in the inning after the first two singles, then got a strikeout to end the inning, preserving the two-run lead.
The Aggies added an insurance score in the seventh on a Holmes RBI single and Waldusky shut the door in the bottom of the inning despite allowing a one-out triple to Nicole Johnson and a walk, getting a pair of strikeouts in the frame to end the game.
Holmes (11-8) started and earned the win, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out three, while Waldusky earned her second save of the year, scattering four hits over two innings but striking out three.
Fascetti (0-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3, making only her fourth start of the season and her first since Feb. 20 against BYU. Heinle entered in relief in the sixth, allowing a run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.
The two teams return to the field on Sunday (April 25) at noon in the third game of the series.
