FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (15-8) will host the Cougars of Houston in a Tuesday night matchup at Anderson Family Field. First pitch will be at 6:00 p.m.
The Titans are coming off a 3-1 weekend at the Silicon Valley Classic II in Northern California. Their first scheduled game against San Jose State was canceled due to inclement weather, but all four games at Santa Clara were played. The first game of the weekend was a tough 5-0 loss to Nevada, but Fullerton bounced back with consecutive shutout victories against Weber State and Northern Kentucky. They closed out the weekend with a dominant 8-1 win over Santa Clara.
The Titan pitching staff has combined for 21.1 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run since the loss to Nevada. Taylor Dockins got the streak started with her first complete game shutout of the season against Weber State followed by a Sophie Frost complete game shutout against Northern Kentucky. Dani Martinez threw six shutout innings against Santa Clara, but the Broncos were able to plate an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.
For the season, Ari Williams leads the Fullerton offense in most offensive categories with a .391 average, .466 on-base percentage, .672 slugging percentage, 25 hits, five home runs, 18 RBI, and six stolen bases. Freshman Alexa Neil continues to set the tone out of the leadoff spot with a .365 average, .437 on-base percentage and a team-high 20 runs scored. Deshea Hill has started to find her groove at the plate after hitting .500 over the weekend, upping her season average to .329 with 24 hits and 17 RBI.
In the circle, Dockins has taken over as the team ERA leader after her dominant game against Weber State, sitting at a 2.49 ERA for the year in 25.1 innings of work. Dani Martinez is right behind her at a 2.64 mark in 53 innings while leading the team in strikeouts with 59 so far. Sophie Frost continues to lower her ERA mark as she now sits at a 3.00 through 56 innings pitched in the circle.
Houston is off to an 18-8 start to their season and coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Highlander Classic. As a team, they are hitting .297 with a 1.63 team ERA in the circle. Lindsey Stewart leads the offense with a .416 average and 23 RBI while Presley Bell leads the pitching staff with a 0.47 ERA in 44.2 innings of work.
The Titans and Cougars have only met once in program history with the Titans winning it 8-0 in five innings. That matchup was back in 2017 at Anderson Family Field.
