LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Major League Baseball hosted their first 'Take the Field' event over the weekend as the 2018 Winter Meetings get underway in Las Vegas, Nevada this week. Junior Kelsie Whitmore was a part of the 50 women chosen to participate.

The group of participants Whitmore was a part of consisted of former baseball and softball players, as well as coaches, collegiate assistants, and scouts.

"Not many women are given a fair shot in what they want to do in life," said Whitmore. "After being a part of this amazing opportunity of networking and gaining more knowledge of the game, I can see a bright future of women taking charge on and off the baseball field. This experience meant a lot to me. Simply being surrounded by 50 other women that love and talk the game of baseball felt like home and it really inspired me."

'Take the Field' was a two-day event, designed for these 50 pre-selected women who are pursuing careers in areas traditionally dominated by men in the baseball world to gain more knowledge of the industry. MLB has made significant progress with infusing women into front office roles in the industry, but there are still many positions dominated by men.

This event was held to give these women more exposure into working in the baseball world. Some may have walked away with job offers, but the main idea was that all of the participants would make some meaningful contacts and gain an idea of the path they will need to take to gain employment in professional baseball.

Whitmore has already earned a spot in the National Baseball Hall of Fame after becoming one of the first female athletes to play professional baseball. More recently, she played on the USA National Women's Baseball Team over the summer in the 2018 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's Baseball World Cup.
