IRVINE, Calif.- Cal State Fullerton senior Kelsey Kessler (Blue Springs, Mo./Arizona State) won her second straight Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week award after throwing a pair of shutouts against conference rival Long Beach State.
The right-hander threw a three-hitter in the game one 6-0 victory and followed with a two-hitter in a 1-0 triumph to finish the week with 14.0 innings pitched and a 0.00 ERA. She scattered just five hits over the two appearances, walking six and striking out nine.
Kessler has not allowed a run for 30.2 consecutive innings. In that span, she is 6-0 and has lowered her season ERA to 1.43.
In game one, Kessler did not allow a hit until a leadoff single in the fifth. She wiggled out of her only jam in the sixth after the Beach put runners at first and second with two singles. However, Kessler retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a ground out to escape damage.
Kessler was even more dominant in the 1-0 victory, surrendering only a single in the fourth and a triple in the sixth among the two LBSU hits. With runners at the corners and one out in the sixth, Kessler fanned Julia Lombardi looking and coaxed Hannah Cookson into a pop up to end the threat. CSF scored the only run of the game in the top half of the seventh, and Kessler polished off the game with a strikeout and two fly outs.
