DAVIS, Calif. – The Titans out run the UC Davis Aggies 6-5 in their series opener, Friday afternoon at the La Rue Field.
Second-off the lineup, Samantha Vandiver led the way offensively by going three for four at the plate and batting .336 during the game. Ariana Williams also impressed by smacking an immediate triple for two RBIs.
Pitcher Sydney Golden (3-5) earned her third win for the Titans with zero runs on zero hits and five solid strikeouts in two innings. Sara Cardona (1-5) took the loss for the Aggies with two runs on seven hits, both earned and had one strikeout.
The Aggies opened the conference play with two singles to front load the bases followed by a bunt single to bring in the run for the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning with two outs, Delynn Rippy singled and stole second base. Samantha Vandiver got a base hit and advanced Rippy to third. Then Ariana Williams smashed the ball for a triple to bat in Rippy and Vandiver. Lexi Gonzalez reached first from an error on the Aggies' second baseman, only to bring in Williams for the Titans' third run.
Kelsie Whitmore entered the game as Gonzalez's pinch runner, then Titans loaded the bases and Whitmore was able to score from Mikaela Francis being hit by a pitch.
In the fifth inning, Ariana Williams was a threat at the plate again with a single up the middle to get on base and then stole second. Lexi Gonzalez batted in Williams for the Titans' fifth run with a single down the middle.
The Aggies scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth including a home run from Maddie Rojas to right center for three RBIs to tie the game 4-4.
To finish the game in the seventh inning, Lexi Gonzalez got on base with a walk, followed by a base hit from Shianne Brannan. Kylie Padilla singled for the RBI to bring in Gonzalez to seal the win for the Titans 6-5.
Cal State Fullerton will play again tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. against UC Davis at the La Rue Field.
