FULLERTON, Calif. – After an impressive performance at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, Cal State Fullerton pitcher Kelsey Kessler was named Big West Pitcher of the week, the conference announced on Monday.
In two starts last weekend, Kessler was outstanding in the circle for the Titans as she collected victories against Mississippi State and Texas Tech while posting one complete game (vs. Mississippi State), 13 strikeouts and a 1.11 ERA in 13-plus innings pitched. The senior also holds a team-low 1.84 overall ERA (sixth in the Big West), team-high 27 strikeouts (third in the Big West) and earned All-Tournament team honors.
Kessler becomes the first Titan since 2016 Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year Sydney Golden took the honor last season in late-April. The senior also adds to the Fullerton lead with now 148 Titans earning Big West Player of the Week honors, which is the most in conference history.
The Blue Springs, Mo., native could make it two-straight seasons in which a Fullerton pitcher receives the weekly honor multiple times in a season as former Titan & 2016 Big West Pitcher of the Year Desiree Ybarra earned the honor twice last year.
Kessler and the Titans will hit the diamond for seven games in six days this week as the Titans head to Bakersfield for a doubleheader tomorrow at 12/2 p.m. and hosts Houston on Thursday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Cathedral City, Calif., for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
At the Mary Nutter, Fullerton will battle Georgia and Louisville on Saturday at 5/7:30 p.m. and take on Utah and St. John's at 2/4:30 p.m. to cap off the week.
