FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team will make its 26th appearance in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship Friday, May 20 at 3 p.m., when the Titans take on Fresno State in the Los Angeles Regional. The field of 64 teams was announced Sunday evening by the Division I Softball Committee.
Cal State Fullerton is one of four teams along with Fresno State, CSU Bakersfield and host, UCLA, in the Los Angeles Regional
The Titans (43-14, 17-4 Big West) secured a spot in the NCAA Regionals after winning the Big West Conference title last weekend for the first time in ten years. Cal State Fullerton received an automatic bid with a series victory over CSUN as the Titans will make their first NCAA Regional appearance since 2009.
CSF will play Fresno State which is 41-10-1 overall. The Bulldogs made their way into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Mountain West Conference with a 22-1 league record. Their only loss came against UNLV on the final day of the regular season. The setback snapped a 23-game winning streak that dated back to the end of March. The Bulldogs' last loss came at Cal State Fullerton when the Titans shutout Fresno State by a score of 5-0 on March 22.
The Titans and the Bulldogs have met in NCAA Regionals three times and Fresno State holds a 2-1 edge on Cal State Fullerton. The last time the two teams met in Regionals was in 2006 and Fresno State defeated CSF 2-0 in Fresno, Calif. The Titans' only win over the Bulldogs in Regionals came in 2002, when Cal State Fullerton edged Fresno State 1-0.
Overall, Cal State Fullerton is 33-39 against Fresno State in program history. The Titans are 6-4 when playing the Bulldogs at a neutral site.
