A LOOK AT THE WEEK
The Cal State Fullerton softball team opens the 2016 season, its 37th season in the history of the program, Friday hosting the Titan Classic. CSF welcomes four teams in UT San Antonio, San Diego State, Weber State and Canisius to Anderson Family Field to kick of the year with a three-day tournament.

The tournament begins Feb. 12 at 11 a.m., but the Titans' first game isn't scheduled until 4 p.m., when they take on the Roadrunners of UTSA. Fullerton concludes day one of the tournament with San Diego State at 6:30 p.m.

COMING INTO 2016
Cal State Fullerton comes into thr 2016 season with high hopes as the Titans return 19 letterwinners after having lost just three.

Of the 19 returners, seven were regular starters a year ago in sophomore shortstop Shianne Brannan, senior designated player Sarah Moore, junior catcher Kylie Padilla, junior right fielder Delynn Rippy, senior center fielder Courtney Rodriguez, senior third baseman Missy Taukeiaho and sophomore left fielder Samantha Vandiver.

The Titans also welcome back all five of their pitchers in senior right-hander Jasmine Auntunez, sophomore righty Brooke Clemetson, junior right-hander Cerissa Riversa, junior left-hander Chirstina Washington and senior southpaw Desiree Ybarra.

Fullerton has also added seven newcomers with four freshmen and three transfers.

IN THE POLLS
The Titan Classic welcomes four strong opponents, however neither Cal State Fullerton or its weekend counterparts are starting the season ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches and ESPN.com/USA Softball Coaches polls.

On the year, the Titans will face several ranked opponents as they will face No. 5 Alabama, No. 7 UCLA, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Florida State, No. 12 Georgia and No. 22 Arizona State during a very competitive schedule.

SIZING UP IN THE RPI
At the conclusion of the 2015 season, Cal State Fullerton finished ranked 52 in RPI.

The Titans were second among Big West Conference opponents as they came in just behind CSUN's RPI of 51.

Long Beach State was third in the league with an RPI of 57, while Hawaii posted an RPI of 66 and UC Riverside boasted a 70.

Rounding out the conference were Cal Poly (132), UC Davis (140) and UC Santa Barbara (149).

BIG WEST PRESEASON POLL
When the Big West Conference Preseason Poll was released, Cal State Fullerton came away with second place after securing 52 points and one first-place vote. The Titans were picked to finish second behind Long Beach State which was predicted to win the league with 62 points and six first-place votes.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
The Titans were one of the most prolific offenses in the league a year ago as they ranked second in the Big West in runs (278), hits (465), doubles (71), triples (12), total bases (638), walks (170) and stolen bases (49).

With the return of hot-hitting Missy Taukeiaho and Courtney Rodriguez, Cal State Fullerton looks to continue its offensive tear into the 2016 season.

Taukeiaho finished her junior campaign with a .390 batting average, 12 home runs, 41 RBIs and a .728 slugging percentage, while Rodriguez had an outstanding sophomore year as she hit .406 with 80 hits, 10 doubles, 42 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

RETURN OF THE ALL-AMERICAN
Missy Taukeiaho is coming off of her third straight All-American season. She was selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Third Team and also landed on the All-West Region First Team for the second consecutive year. Finally, she was named to the All-Big West First Team for the second time in her career.

Most recently, Taukeiaho was selected as one of 50 student-athletes on the "Watch List" for the 2016 USA Collegiate Softball Player of the Year award. The is the second straight year she has been selected to the "Watch List"

WELCOME TO CAL STATE FULLERTON
During the early signing period, the Cal State Fullerton softball team received seven signed National Letters of Intent from Arianna Burns, Sophie Frost, Irie Naea, Emily Randall, Zoe Richard, Julia Valenzuela and Kelsie Whitmore.

The signing class is comprised of seven freshman and includes half a dozen from California and one from the state of Washington.

Here is a quick breakdown of the signees:

Burns is an outfielder and right-handed pitcher out of Lakewood High School in Long Beach.

Frost is a right-handed pitcher from Jackson High School in Mill Creek, Wash.

Naea is an infielder and outfielder who played at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, Calif.

Randall is a San Jose, Calif., native who played infield at Mt. Pleasant High School.

Richard is from Highland, Calif., and played first base at Citrus Valley High School.

Valenzuela is a catcher out of Bishop Amat High School and is a native of La Mirada, Calif.

Lastly, Whitmore is from Temecula Valley High School where she played outfield as both a baseball and softball player.

ON DECK
After the conclusion of the Titan Classic, Cal State Fullerton hits the road for its first road tournament of the year. on Friday, Feb. 19. The Titans head north to the Santa Clara Bronco Classic where they will go up against the hosts as well as Seattle and Idaho State.
