University of Southern California senior Leah Gallegos headed home the game-winner in the 49th minute and the Women of Troy advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga on Friday night at Titan Stadium.
USC improved to 13-5-2 overall on the season and will meet the winner of the Cal State Fullerton-UNLV match on Sunday at 1 p.m. Gonzaga finishes its best season in school history with a 12-4-4 overall record.
The lone goal of the match started after a Bulldogs' foul on the left side of the field. USC assist leader Rosa Anna Tantillo's free kick from 30 yards out found the head of Gallegos at the left post as she headed it past Gonzaga goalkeeper Ashley Haugen.
Veronica Simonton made three saves on the night to earn the shutout while the Women of Troy outshot the Bulldogs, 12-8.
