Women's Soccer Stays Home For 2005 NCAA Tournament

Nov. 7, 2005

FULLERTON, CA - The storybook season of 2005 will feature yet another chapter as, for the first time in the history of the program, the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team will host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament at Titan Stadium this weekend.

Southern California (12-5-2) and Gonzaga (12-3-4) will face off in the first match on Friday (Nov. 11) at 5 p.m., with the top-seeded Titans (17-3) taking on UNLV (13-6-3) 30 minutes following the completion of the first match.

Friday night's winners advance to Sunday's (Nov. 13) second-round match at 1 p.m.

Cal State Fullerton is one of four national No. 3 seeds, joining Connecticut, California, and Duke.

This season marks the Titans' second ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Ali Khosroshahin led Cal State Fullerton into the 2001 playoffs, falling to UCLA in the first round.

Fullerton has faced four other NCAA-bound schools this season: Santa Clara is a No. 2 seed and will host Fresno State in a first-round match-up, Utah will play host to Arizona, and UC Riverside is one of four teams which will be playing at UCLA.

The Titans are 3-2 against those schools this season with wins over the Utes, Bulldogs, and Highlanders.

The four national No. 1 seeds are North Carolina, Penn State, UCLA, and Portland. The four national No. 2 seeds are defending national champion Notre Dame, Virginia, Florida State, and Santa Clara. The four national No. 4 seeds are BYU, Pepperdine, Marquette, and Texas A&M.

Third round matches will be played as campus sites to be determined on Nov. 18, 19, or 20, as will quarterfinal matches on Nov. 25, 26, or 27. The 24th annual NCAA Women's College Cup will be played on Dec. 2 and 4 at the Aggie Soccer Complex in College Station, Texas, with Texas A&M as the host.
