Gibbens, Scott Named Big West Scholar-Athletes

March 16, 2009

FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton senior women's soccer player Jenae Gibbens and senior infielder Joe Scott have been named the school's Big West Conference Female and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Gibbens, who also earned the honor for 2007-08, adds to her lengthy laundry list of awards for the 2008-09 academic year. In addition to being named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team and finishing as one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, Gibbens was also named to the All-Big West Conference First Team for the second straight year and finished tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 points on three goals (all game-winners) and seven assists.

The 2007 Big West Conference Defender of the Year is one of nine Titans to be named to at least three All-Big West teams and one of only eight to win a pair of first-team kudos.

Outside of campus life, Jenae has coached a local high school team for the last four years. A business and marketing major, Jenae hopes to play soccer in Europe and pursue a career in the hospitality industry, specifically hotel management and event planning.

Scott has been an integral part of the Titans' infield for three seasons. He was the team's defensive co-player of the year in 2007, playing in all 63 games. In 2008, his move to second base from shortstop coincided with the Titans' stretch run to another Big West Conference title and an NCAA Super Regional berth.

Scott batted .289 in 2008 and this year he's at .225 with 11 RBI in 16 games from the No. 9 spot in the order. He was drafted in the 41st round of the Major League Baseball Draft by Milwaukee last June. A kinesiology major, he hopes to play professional baseball and then teach physical education.
