STOCKTON, CA - Pacific's Laura Hogan netted two goals, including the game-winning score in the 80th minute, to key a three-goal second half outburst and help lift the host Tigers to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Cal State Fullerton on Friday night in Stockton, Calif.
The loss dropped the Titans to 6-7-1 overall and 1-2 in Big West Conference play while Pacific moved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in league action, snapping an eight-match losing streak to Fullerton in the process. Friday night marked the 10th time in 16 all-time meetings that a match between the two programs had been decided by a single goal.
In a match that featured a combined 40 fouls and a total of four yellow cards issued against Cal State Fullerton, the Tigers rallied from a 2-1 deficit late in the second half.
Sammi Teramae tied the match with her second goal of the year on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to set up Hogan's game-winning heroics. Hogan took a long pass over the top from teammate Laura King for the second time on the night, heading home the go-ahead score at the 79:57 mark.
It was the third time in the last four matches that the Titans have been victimized in the final 10 minutes of the match, suffering losses to Hawaii and Cal Poly when the opposition scored the tying or go ahead goals in the closing minutes.
Fullerton got on the board first just 17 minutes in as junior Danielle Bitonti netted her second goal of the season after a long throw in and a misclear by the Pacific defense.
The score remained that way until the second half when the Hogan-King duo combined for the first time on the night to tie the match. Hogan scored her second goal of the year with a chip over a charging Margaret Dupes off her line to make it 1-1.
The Titans regained the lead in the 71st minute as sophomore Sam Stillion scored her first career goal off a long throw in by senior Jenae Gibbens, slamming home the pass to the back post to make it 2-1.
Pacific outshot Fullerton, 15-6, on the night, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Bitonti was the only Titan with multiple shots on the night, taking a pair to lead the team. King had five shots for the Tigers to lead all players and was followed by Hogan's four shots.
Dupes tied her career high with six saves on the night for the Titans while Amanda McNab made three stops in the win for Pacific.
Cal State Fullerton concludes its Northern California road swing with a match on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12) at 12 p.m. at UC Davis.
