LOS ANGELES, CA - Loyola Marymount's Julie Gallaudet knocked home a rebound off the crossbar in the fourth minute of overtime on Friday afternoon, lifting the host Lions to a 1-0 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles.
The loss dropped the Titans to 3-7 overall on the season and brings to an end their month-long, six-match road trip where they went just 1-5. LMU improved to 8-3 overall with the win, claiming its fourth-straight home victory and its fourth win in the team's last five matches.
Sophomore keeper Jessica Change kept Cal State Fullerton in the match all afternoon, making a career-high eight saves - including a pair in overtime - but the crossbar had a hand in denying her a ninth to extend the contest. Brittney Sanford's second corner kick of the overtime was finally converted as the ball deflected off the bar and down into the mix to Gallaudet, who knocked it in to an open net for her second score of the season and the only goal of the match.
That sequence came just seconds after another Sanford corner was almost converted by teammate Etajha Gilmer, but the ball was saved off the line by the Fullerton defense to keep the match scoreless.
The Titans were outshot by a 14-6 margin with 11 of those shots for the Lions coming in regulation. Fullerton's JeAnne Mazeau put the first shot of the match on net for the Titans, but the LMU defense then shut down the attack, holding Fullerton to without a shot until the final 10 seconds of the first half. The Titans finished with four shots and three corners after the break, but were unable to convert on any of their chances, forcing the two teams to battle in the extra period.
Change, whose previous career high was four saves against New Mexico on Oct. 25 last season, posted the most saves for a Fullerton keeper since Shannon Simpson finished with nine stops in a 1-1 draw with Utah on Sept. 21, 2008, in Salt Lake City.
Six different players notched shots for the Titans, who were outshot for the eighth time in 10 matches overall this season. Tawni Martino finished with five shots - all on frame - to lead all players for the Lions, who put nine of their 14 shots overall on net.
Fullerton will look for a change in fortune on Sunday night (Oct. 3) as it returns home for the first time in over a month, hosting San Diego in the final non-conference match of the year at Titan Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
