FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton junior Casey Volk finished with a goal and an assist on the day while senior Christina Murillo also found the back of the net in the second half, helping propel the host Titans to a 2-0 victory over No. 18 UNC Greensboro in the final match of the 2010 Under Armour Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.

The win improved Fullerton to 2-2 overall on the season as the Titans posted their first win over a ranked opponent since shutting out No. 23 UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 5, 2008, snapping a three-match losing streak against ranked opposition in the process.

The Spartans suffered their first loss of the year, falling to 3-1-1 overall.

UNCG pushed the pace early, outshooting the Titans, 7-2, in the opening half and having two of those shots careen off the crossbar and away from danger while goalkeeper Jordan-Michelle Santos turned away two shots in the opening period.

Cal State Fullerton then turned up the heat in the second half, wasting very little time before finding the back of the net. Just under two minutes into the second half, junior Caitlin Mellano started the run down the left side before lofting a ball into the box and finding the head of Volk, who headed it back to the left side for her first goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.

Volk also helped out on the Titans' second goal of the day 12 minutes later, making a run down the right side before getting a foot on a ball headed for the end line. Her pass was headed on by freshman Kishi Smith to Murillo on the back side, who poked it home to the left side for her second score of the year and the 2-0 advantage.

Fullerton, despite getting outshot 9-6 in the second half, continued to apply pressure, taking three corners in the second half, while Santos made four saves after the break finish with her first shutout of the year and six saves overall.

Kelsey Kearney made two saves for the Spartans, who were led by Jenn Partenheimer's six shots on the afternoon - four of those in the first half. Kishi Smith finished with two shots to pace the Titans, who got shots from seven different players on the afternoon.

In the first match of the day, USC's Megan Ohai put home a Karter Haug free kick in the 10th minute and the Trojans' defense held tough for a 1-0 victory over Purdue.

USC finished the tournament 1-0-1 and is now 2-1-2 overall on the year while the Boilermakers finished 1-1 in the tournament and are now 3-2-1 overall on the season.

The goal was Ohai's first of the season as Haug's long kick from near the midfield stripe sailed over the Purdue keeper to Ohai, who headed in the pass for the lone score of the match. The Trojans outshot the Boilermakers, 13-8, for the match led by three shots apiece from Ohai, Samantha Johnson, and Carly Butcher while goalkeeper Shelby Church logged her second shutout of the weekend, making one save.

Purdue keeper Carianne Betts finished with five saves on the afternoon in the loss as Lauren Montenegro and Jordan Frick each finished with two shots.

Cal State Fullerton hits the road next weekend, competing at the USC Tournament in Los Angeles, CA. The Titans open against Northern Arizona on Friday afternoon (Sept. 10) at 1 p.m. before taking on Auburn on Sunday morning (Sept. 12) at 11 a.m. at McAlister Field.
