FULLERTON, Calif. - A late second half own goal proved to be the difference, as Team Blue defeated Team Orange 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Titan Stadium in the program's annual intrasquad scrimmage.
The game was an abbreviated two 30 minute halves, but there was still plenty of action to go around. The blue side was able to strike for two goals on five shots and four saves, while the orange side scored a goal on six shots and a save.
Saturday's scrimmage served as a great tune up for the 2018 season, as the Titans will kick things off with an exhibition affair at San Diego State next Friday at 7 pm PT.
It didn't take long for the scoring to get going, as senior Alyssa Shelton opened things up with a beautiful strike into the back of the net following a deflection to put the blue side in front 1-0 with still 24:23 remaining in the first half.
However, freshman Kristen Swales showed some skill, as she equalized the game at 1-1, after she buried a header off a corner kick for Team Orange. Jessica Simonian was credited with the assist.
The two sides went into the intermission tied at 1-1.
The defense tightened up in the second half, as the chances for both sides were few and far between.
However, let in the second half, a nice move in the box by Haley Brown give the blue squad a chance. It wasn't how it was drawn up, but a Brown cross deflected off an orange player and into the back of the net give Team Blue the lead and secure the 2-1 win.
The Titans will get back to work this week as they look to defend their Big West Conference crown.
