Fullerton Hits The Road To Play UC Riverside and Long Beach State

The Titans hit the road this week for more conference play as they take on UC Riverside, Thursday at 5:00 p.m. PT, and end the week Sunday at Long Beach State at 6:00 p.m. PT.

QUICK HITS

•           Cal State Fullerton goes into this week with a three-game win streak and an overall record of 8-2-2. (1-0 in conference). 

•           With the first goal against Utah State (8/27), Atlanta Primus entered the record book with one of the quickest goals to begin a game with a time of 2:26.

•           Fullerton notches three of the top five leading scorers in the conference, Samantha KoemansSarah Fajnor and Atlanta Primus tie with five goals on the season.

•           The Titans lead the Big West in points per game with an average of 6.25.

•           Fullerton leads the conference in scoring offense with 2.25 goals per game.

UC Riverside
5:00 p.m. PT | Thursday, Oct. 5 | UCR Soccer Stadium

Cal State Fullerton has a 10-5-3 overall record against Riverside.  The Titans have defeated the Highlanders in the past three matchups. These teams last met at Titan Stadium on Sept. 30, 2016, where the Titans won 2-1.  Currently, the Highlanders are 2-0 in conference play with an overall record of 5-7-2.

OPPONENT AND HISTORY
Long Beach State  
6:00 p.m. PT | Sunday, Oct. 8 | George Allen Field

The Titans head to George Allen Field on Sunday where they come in with an 11-8-2 overall record against the Beach. When they last met on Oct. 9, 2016, Fullerton won 1-0.  Much like the Titans, the Beach comes into conference with a 1-0 record, overall Long Beach's record this season is 7-3-1.

COACH HITS TRIPLE DIGITS
With the win against Northridge (10/1) Head Coach Demian Brown notched 100 career wins.  Over his 11 years as head coach, Brown has steered the Titans to four Big West regular season championships (2007, 2012, 2014, 2015) and four Big West Tournament championships (2007, 2013, 2014, 2015) representing the league as the Big West's automatic qualifier at the NCAA Tournament for three of the last five years (2013, 2014, 2015) in addition to the Titans' postseason trip in 2007.  In 2016, Brown finished the season with an 8-10-1 overall record where the Titans made it to the semi-finals in which they lost to UC Irvine.  

TITANS SWEEP
Cal State Fullerton women's soccer swept the Big West Player of the Week (9/25) honors as the squad picked up two shutout wins last weekend against San Diego and Grand Canyon at Titan Stadium. Senior forward Sarah Fajnor was named Big West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week while fellow senior goalkeeper Morgan Bertsch garnered Big West Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

HOOVER HONORED
For the first time in her career, senior Kaycee Hoover earned the Big West Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 4th. Hoover recorded two goals over the weekend at Titan Stadium. Her first, against Iowa State (9/8) was the goal to solidify the Titans 2-1 win. Her second, would come as a game-winning goal against Utah Valley (9/10) in what was a 3-0 shutout win for CSF. Fullerton scored three goals in the first half, the last time this was recorded was Nov. 11, 2015 against UCSB.

PRIMUS IN HER PRIME
Reigning from London, England, sophomore Atlanta Primus leads the Titans with four goals this season. Primus has currently scored a goal in each of the last three games. Last year, Primus notched one goal and was appointed to the Big West Conference All-Freshmen Team. Currently, she is tied with UC Santa Barbara's Amanda Ball for the most goals in the league. Primus's father, Linvoy Primus, had a 16-year professional career as a defender playing for Charlton Athletic, Barnet, Reading and Portsmouth.

FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET
Sunday night (10/1) against the Matadors, Tala Haddad shot the game-winning goal for the Titans in the 20th minute.  Haddad received the ball from Samantha Koemans and netted her third goal of the season.  Jazzmin Mancilla notched her first goal of the season in the 71st minute after she centered the ball to the box and the ball was misplayed by the goalie.  Mancilla comes off an ACL injury which ended her 2016 season.  The Titans kept the momentum going as freshmen Haley Brown headed the ball in with the assist from Atlanta Primus and Koemans in the 72nd minute.  This would become Brown's first goal of the season.

IN THE PRESEASON POLL
The Titans came in second place in Big West's women's soccer preseason poll released on Aug. 10. Cal State Fullerton secured 63 points in the polls, trailing Long Beach State in first with 78 points. Titans Connie Caliz made the preseason All-Conference Team.  

2016 RECAP
The Titans finished last season 8-10-1 (5-3-0 Big West). This gave the team a fourth-place finish in the Big West Conference. Jazzmin Mancilla was out for the season after tearing her ACL in the season opener against Saint Mary's. The Titans made it to the semi-final of the Big West Conference Tournament where they fell to UC Irvine in PK's at George Allen Field in Long Beach, Calif. 

WELCOME BACK
Titans welcome back 25 members from last year's squad, including 10 starters from last year. Out of the 10, nine are seniors entering their final year with the program. Senior Morgan Bertsch, is expected to anchor the goal for the Titans.  She made four starts in net compiling, a 1-2-0 record with a save percentage of .800.  The Titans also welcome back their leading scorer from a year ago in Sarah Fajnor.  Tala Haddad makes her return to the Titan midfield.  She secured nine points for Titans scoring three goals while recording three assists.  She is expected to have a strong senior year. The senior compiled 16 points on seven goals scored and two assists.
