Fullerton to Take on St. Mary’s and Utah

FULLERTON, Calif. ­­­­–Cal State Fullerton women's soccer travels to Moraga, California to face St. Mary's on Friday at 3:00 p.m. PT. They return home on Sunday to finish the weekend against University of Utah at 5 p.m. PT at Titan Stadium.

QUICK HITS:

  • Cal State Fullerton is tied atop the Big West Standings with Cal State Northridge as both teams are 2-0-2 thus far.
  • Samantha Koemans leads the squad with 10 shots and two goals. Koemans scored an unassisted equalizer against No. 17 BYU Friday Aug. 25.
  • By scoring the first goal of the match against Utah State just 2:26 into the game, Atlanta Primus enters the school record book with the 10th-fastest goal in program history.
  • The Titans have won 31 corner kicks this season and only surrendered 18.
  • The team was down a player for over 50 minutes against the Aggies but remained aggressive as they out-shot the opponent 7-6 in the second half and overtime periods.
  • The Titans forced a draw in double overtime during both games over the weekend against No. 17 BYU and Utah State which allowed head coach Demian Brown to show the team's depth as he played 18 Titans against the Aggies on Sunday.

 

OPPONENT AND HISTORY

Saint Mary's

Fullerton heads to Moraga, California with the advantage having between the Gaels in the last four meetings.  Last year when the Titans met the Gaels, the Titans won 2-1 at Titan Stadium.  During that game, Jazzmin Mancilla would tear her ACL and suffer a season-ending ACL injury. Fullerton looks to stay undefeated as they head to Moraga.

University of Utah
5:00 p.m. PT | Sunday Sept. 3 | Titan Stadium

After the previous six meetings, Fullerton holds a record of 2-1-3 in six all-time matches against Utah. The last time the teams met was in 2015 at Utah in which the Titans won 3-1.

FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET

In the season opener against Seattle University at Titan Stadium, Atlanta Primus exploded onto the field with a goal (3:09). Primus controlled the ball down the middle and netted it into the left side of the goal unassisted.  Sarah Fajnor would add to the hot streak with a goal to follow in the eighth minute. Off the turnover Fajnor would create the opportunity for the goal from the left for the game winner.

At Fresno State, Samantha Koemans would score an equalizing goal to put Fullerton back in the game and move the momentum forward. The Titans offense would attack again in the 59th minute with a goal by Sarah Fajnor, her second of the season. With this goal Fajnor would now boost the team to a season record of 2-0.

In Provo, Utah the Titans would take on No. 17 BYU. Once again Samantha Koemans would equalize the game with a goal from the left corner of the box in the 30th minute to keep spirits up and send the Titans into double overtime.  

Against Utah State, Atlanta Primus would again erupt onto the field with a record setting goal in the third minute. Primus and the offense would outshoot Utah 15-8.

IN THE PRESEASON POLL
The Titans came in second place in Big West's women's soccer preseason poll released on Aug. 10. Cal State Fullerton secured 63 points in the polls, trailing Long Beach State in first with 78 points. Titans Connie Caliz made the preseason All-Conference Team.  

2016 RECAP
The Titans finished last season 8-10-1 (5-3-0 Big West). This gave the team a fourth-place finish in the Big West Conference. Jazzmin Mancilla was out for the season after tearing her ACL in the season opener against Saint Mary's. The Titans made it to the semi-final of the Big West Conference Tournament where they fell to UC Irvine in PK's at George Allen Field in Long Beach, Calif. 

WELCOME BACK
Titans welcome back 25 members from last year's squad, including 10 starters from last year. Out of the 10, nine are seniors entering their final year with the program. Senior Morgan Bertsch, is expected to anchor the goal for the Titans.  She made four starts in net compiling, a 1-2-0 record with a save percentage of .800.  The Titans also welcome back their leading scorer from a year ago in Sarah Fajnor.  Tala Haddad makes her return to the Titan midfield.  She secured nine points for Titans scoring three goals while recording three assists.  She is expected to have a strong senior year. The senior complied 16 points on seven goals scored and two assists.
