FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team completed its spring season with a 2-0 victory over CSU Bakersfield while hosting its inaugural cancer awareness match last Saturday.
Over 600 people turned out throughout the day at the Titan Track Complex as the festivities began with a youth match between Fullerton Rangers U11 and West Coast FC U11.
Christina Burkenroad provided the goals in Fullerton's 2-0 win over the Roadrunners with Lauren Stupin and Adriana Gjonovich notching the assists for the defending Big West Tournament champions.
The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team partnered with Soccer For Hope, a non-profit cancer awareness foundation located in Orange County, to help spread cancer awareness at the team's spring finale.
"The Soccer For Hope charity match was a tremendous success," head coach Demian Brown said. "I am so grateful to student-athletes from both the men's and women's soccer programs that represented Cal State Fullerton as well as Be The Match bone marrow registry and everyone associated with Soccer For Hope that made this evernt possible. Soccer For Hope is an amazing charity, and for our student-athletes to have the opportunity to support and help spread the word about cancer awareness is a reward in itself."
Soccer for Hope was in attendance at last Saturday's match to distribute information about the organization's work as the Titans have associated with the non-profit for over 10 years, participating in yearly camps.
Soccer For Hope is an organization founded by Oliver & Jamie Wyss in 1998. Oliver is a former professional soccer player and survivor of Aplastic Anemia. The organization has been driven by its goal to raise funds and awareness for children with life-threatening diseases.
Oliver & Jamie's young children, Hudson and Abella, were both diagnosed with very rare, cancerous brain tumors. Since its inception, Soccer For Hope has progressed from an annual local event in Southern California to a nationwide charity that benefits thousands of children and their families.
Be The Match was also in attendance at the match allowing fans, families, alumni or faculty and staff to voluntarily register as bone marrow donors.
The Titans completed their 2014 spring season with a record of 5-2 as Burkenroad led the squad with seven goals.
"As the spring comes to an end, I am very happy with the progress the women made on the soccer field over the last three months," Brown said. "I am impressed with our style of play as well as the individual improvements, and I look forward to a successful 2014 campaign."
