KICK OFF: After having its three-match unbeaten streak snapped on road last weekend, the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team (2-2-1 overall) looks to begin anew at home this weekend, opening its second, three-match homestand of the year at Titan Stadium. Fullerton welcomes Southern California rival Loyola Marymount to kick things off on Friday night (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m., before hosting former conference rival Utah State on Sunday (Sept. 15) at 1 p.m.

"O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!": Cal State Fullerton junior midfielder Chelsey Patterson has been named team captain for the 2013 season.
TV TIME FOR TITAN STADIUM: For the second consecutive season, it was announced that the championship match of this year's Big West Conference women's soccer tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Titan Stadium would be televised live on FOX Sports PrimeTicket at 1 p.m. on Nov. 10. Last year, the Titans and Cal State Northridge battled it out in front of the network's cameras at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium, a match eventually won by the Matadors, 1-0, in overtime. It will be the first televised collegiate women's soccer match at Titan Stadium since Oct. 25, 2006, when Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State clashed on the Fox Soccer Channel.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT BRIEFLY: The Lions enter the weekend with a 3-3 overall record, having lost back-to-back matches at Stanford (4-0) and Long Beach State (1-0) to kick-off a four-match road swing... prior to that LMU had won three-straight... Friday will mark the Lions' fourth match against Big West Conference teams, looking to improve on a record that includes a 3-1 loss at Cal Poly in the season opener and a 1-0 win in double overtime against UC Santa Barbara... LMU will also face UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge to round out it's Big West "schedule"... sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Blankenship leads the Lions with four points (1 goal, 2 assists) on the season, standing as one of four players who have found the back of the net for LMU this season... senior keeper Brittany Jagger returns in net, posting a 1.45 goals against average and 17 saves to go with a pair of shutouts this season in six starts.
UTAH STATE BRIEFLY: The Aggies enter the weekend unbeaten on the season at 4-0-1 with a match against Arkansas at home on Friday (Sept. 13) prior to heading to Southern California... following three consecutive shutouts to start the season against Creighton, Utah Valley, and UTEP, Utah State has battled Nebraska to a 2-2 draw and edged Idaho State, 3-2, last weekend with a penalty kick goal in the 88th minute... the Aggies have been outshot, 78-69, this season, but have outscored the opposition, 10-4... Taryn Rose, who had the game-winner against Idaho State, is one of three Utah State players with two goals on the year and one of six who have found the back of the net... sophomore Jeannie Woller enters her first full season as starter in net, having posted a 0.77 GAA and 33 saves thus far to go with three shutouts.
SERIES NOTES: LMU leads the all-time series with Cal State Fullerton by an overall count of 9-6-1, having won the last four meetings -- all by a single goal... the Lions posted a 2-1 win in OT last season in Los Angeles, rallying from a goal down and scoring in the fourth minute of extra time to pull out the victory... LMU has won two straight, and three of the last four, in Fullerton, including a 1-0 shutout win in 2011... the Titans' last win in the series came on Nov. 10, 2006, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at UCLA, posting a 3-0 victory... Fullerton's last win at home vs. the Lions came on Sept. 21, 2001, in a 1-0 shutout... four of the 16 all-time meetings have gone to overtime, with the Titans going 0-3-1 in those contests ••• the Titans' lead the all-time series with Utah State, 6-4, with the two teams alternating wins over their last eight meetings... the two former Big West rivals haven't met since the Aggies triumphed, 1-0, in double overtime on Sept. 4, 2011, in Logan -- the only meeting in the history of the series that has ended in overtime... Fullerton is 3-1 all-time against Utah State at home, having won the last two meetings in 2004 (1-0) and 2002 (2-1)... the last three meetings between the two teams have all ended in shutouts.
UTAH ON MY MIND: Sunday's match against Utah State will mark the third contest against a team from the state this season, but the Titans are still looking for their first win against the "Beehive State" in 2013 after falling at BYU, 3-1, on Aug. 23 and battling Utah to a double-overtime scoreless draw on Aug. 30. Fullerton is 8-14 all-time against the State of Utah, having faced five of the state's six Division I programs in its history: BYU (0-6), Utah (1-1-3), Utah State (6-4), Weber State (0-1), and Southern Utah (1-0). Utah Valley is the only Division I program in Utah that the Titans have not met in women's soccer.
AS GOES THE UNBEATEN STREAK...: So goes the shutout streak. Texas Tech's goal in the 62nd minute last week ended Fullerton's shutout streak at 363:29 dating all the way back to the second half of the season opener against No. 6 BYU. The run stands as the sixth-longest such streak in the history of the program and the longest since Fullerton went 373:19 without allowing a goal from Sept. 30-Oct. 19 last season.
TOP 10 STREAK FOR MARICIC: Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic also had a lengthy, personal, shutout streak stopped at Texas Tech, as the Red Raiders' goal in the second half ended her run of 273:29 consecutive shutout minutes -- the 10th-longest stretch in school history and the second-longest of her career behind the aforementioned 373:19 minutes without allowing a goal last season. Her streak in 2012 ranks second all-time by a Titan goalkeeper in the history of the program, standing behind only Karen Bardsley's record of 521:35 without allowing a goal from Oct. 9-Nov. 6, 2005.
SHOT DOWN: The Red Raiders' stingy defense, which had held opponents to just 13 shots combined in their first four matches of the year, didn't do the Titans any favors last week, limiting them to just three shots for the match. The total ranks tied for the ninth-lowest on the school's all-time list and were the fewest for a Fullerton squad since BYU held the Titans to just two shot attempts in a 3-0 decision on Aug. 23, 2010, at Titan Stadium.
SLOW START: While Cal State Fullerton's defense has been superb to start the 2013 season, the offense has taken some time to find its legs, held to just four goals through the team's first five matches thus far. It's the slowest start for a Titans offense since the 2009 campaign when Fullerton was held to just three scores through its first five contests as the Titans opened the year 1-4.
BE AGGRESSIVE, B-E AGGRESSIVE: Cal State Fullerton has been the aggressor on the pitch thus far this season, racking up four matches with 10 or more fouls and leading the opposition in that category in four of its five contests this season -- including a season-high 15-4 "advantage" last week in Lubbock against Texas Tech. Only Fresno State (23-11) has "out-fouled" the Titans this season, but to no avail, falling 1-0 to Fullerton back on Aug. 25.
MARICIC MOVING UP THE CHARTS: With her clean sheet in the Titans' scoreless draw with Utah, senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic tallied her 13th career shutout -- tying her with Laura Janke (2000-03) for second on the school's all-time list. However, she has some work to do to catch career leader Karen Bardsley (2002-06), who tallied a school-record 26 career shutouts in her tenure with the Titans. In other categories, Maricic's five saves against Texas Tech last week gave her 165 for her career, solidifying her hold on the No. 4 spot and putting her 25 saves back of Suzy Strazzulla for third place, and enters the week also ranked among the school's top five in saves per game (5th - 3.75), save percentage (4th - .778), goals against average (3rd - 1.04), and wins (4th - 19).
SAVE IT!: While she didn't get the win against No. 6 BYU in the season opener on Aug. 23, Maricic was nonetheless stellar in net against the nationally ranked Cougars, making a career-high 11 saves in the loss -- tied for 10th on the school's single-match list and the most since Karen Bardsley finished with 14 stops in an NCAA Tournament match against UCLA on Nov. 12, 2006 (which stand second for a single match in school history).
BATCHELLER NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cal State Fullerton sophomore defender Morgan Batcheller was named the Big West Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2, after her performance on the backline helped the Titans to a pair of shutouts over the weekend against Utah and Montana. It is the first career award for the Carlsbad, Calif., native and the first for a Fullerton defender since Caitlin Mellano won the honor on Oct. 31, 2011. Batcheller anchored a stingy defense that withstood an 11-shot barrage from the Utes and held leading scorer Baylee Nielson to just two shots in a scoreless draw and, two days later, held the visiting Grizzlies to just four shots in a 2-0 victory.
TITANS PICKED TO DEFEND TITLE: The defending Big West Conference champion Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team was picked to defend its league crown in 2013 according to a vote of the conference's head coaches released by the Big West office on Aug. 15.
It is the first time since 2002 that the Titans have been the preseason pick to win the league, finishing second in the voting twice, and third on three other occasions. Fullerton received five first-place votes and 72 points overall to edge out both Long Beach State and UC Irvine, which tied for second place with a first-place vote and 62 points overall.
Cal Poly (2 first-place votes and 59 points) and defending Big West Tournament champion Cal State Northridge (54 points) round out the top five, followed by UC Santa Barbara (30), Hawaii (27), UC Davis (22), and UC Riverside (17).
PATTERSON EARNS PRESEASON NOD: Junior midfielder Chelsey Patterson was the lone member of the Titan squad named as one of 12 players to the preseason All-Big West Conference Team as voted on by the coaches. Patterson, an All-Big West Honorable Mention honoree in 2012, made 18 starts as a sophomore, scoring her lone goal of the season in the semifinal match of the conference tournament semifinal against UC Irvine -- a match the Titans would win in penalty kicks to advance after a 1-1 draw.
QUICK LOOK AT THE TITANS: Cal State Fullerton returns five starters and 17 letter winners from last season's Big West Conference championship squad that finished 10-9-1 overall and 7-2 in league play en route to the program's sixth regular season league title -- tied with Cal Poly for the most in the history of the conference. The Titans, who finished with a 7-2-1 mark in their final 10 games of the season, lost their top two scorers from a season ago in Stacey Fox (7 goals, 2 assists) and Ann Marie Tangorra (6 goals, 3 assists) to graduation, but return a quartet of All-Big West Honorable Mention selections in sophomore Christina Burkenroad (5 goals, 12 points), junior Rebecca Wilson (1 goal, 2 assists, 51 shots), junior Chelsey Patterson (18 starts, 1 goal, 15 shots), and senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic (0.98 GAA, 54 saves, 5 shutouts), as well as senior playmaker Erica Mazeau (1 goal, 7 assists, 21 shots).
BY THE NUMBERS: Cal State Fullerton returns just under half (15) of the team's 31 goals scored, 20 of the 29 assists, and just over half (162) of the team's 296 shots taken a season ago. What does it all mean? Probably only that numbers are fun.
NEW FACE, SAME PLACE: Fullerton's coaching staff remains largely intact for 2013 with one exception as a familiar face slides over a few seats with the addition of Stacey Fox as an assistant coach. Fox, who completed her eligibility in 2012, takes for the now-departed Lauryn Pehanich, who became the head coach of the women's program at Division III University of La Verne. Fox was a two-time All-West Region selection by the NSCAA during her Titan career -- one of only 10 Fullerton players to make an all-region squad since 1996 and only the third to earn multiple honors (Karen Bardsley and Jenae Gibbens). Fox led the team in scoring with a team-high seven goals and 16 points as a senior in 2012 and ranks among the career top 10 in points (9th - 45), goals (6th -20), goals per game (9th - 0.29), game-winning goals (t3rd - 6), and shots (7th - 110).
AND, BOY, WERE HER ARMS TIRED: No Titan will have travelled further to join her teammates than freshman Tatyana Ungacta, who hails from Hagatna, Guam -- a mere 7,806 miles (as Google Maps flies) from her new home in North Orange County. She edged out former Titans Emma Humphries (6,730 miles from her home in Wellington, New Zealand), Darcy Frenzel (2,359 miles from her hometown of Anchorage, Alaska), and Kristen Boujos (2,185 miles from her home in Whitby, Ontario, Canada). Ungacta joins Humphries and Boujos as the only three players in the history of the program not from one of the 50 States to don a Titan uniform.
SPEAKING OF "FOREIGNERS": A little closer to home, but nonetheless significant, incoming freshman Tara LeBaron is only the 13th player (out of 578 overall in the history of the program) from outside the state of California (not counting the aforementioned "international" trio) to join the Fullerton program. A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, LeBaron is the third "foreigner" to come from "The Silver State" -- tied with with the state of Colorado for the most. Other states to be represented on a Titan roster: Washington, Alaska, Montana, Kansas, Idaho, Indiana, and Arizona.
WELCOME TO THE "U": Ungacta and fellow freshman Nicole Ulrich have the honor of becoming only the second and third Titans with a surname that begins with the letter "U," joining trailblazer Tennli Ulicny (1998-2001).
A TRADITION UNLIKE ANY OTHER: Freshman Nicole Ulrich and senior Erica Mazeau will be carrying on a tradition of sorts in 2013 as their No. 2 and No. 5 jerseys are the only two numbers in the history of the Fullerton program to be worn every season since the program began in 1993.
THAT'S FRESH... MAN: The 2013 crop of 10 true freshmen are the most for a Cal State Fullerton squad since the 2009 team featured the same number to start the season.
