Titans Tackle Top-Ranked 'Noles, Creighton This Week

FULLERTON, Calif.

KICK OFF: A second-straight nationally ranked opponent awaits the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team (1-4 overall) this week, but the level has been taken up a notch as the Titans will take on the top-ranked team in the nation in No. 1 Florida State on the road on Friday (Sept. 7) before hosting Creighton in a Sunday matinee on Sept. 9. Kickoff in Tallahassee, Fla., is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on ESPN3.com while Sunday's contest against the Bluejays is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Titan Stadium.

IN THE POLLS: Florida State is the No. 1 team in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, receiving 32 of the 33 available first-place votes, and is ranked No. 2 by both Soccer America and Soccer Times… Creighton and Cal State Fullerton are unranked this week.

I NEED STATS, STAT!: Barring technical difficulties, live stats will be available for both of the Titans' contests this weekend. Access the links through the women's soccer schedule page at FullertonTitans.com.

HI, MOM!: Friday's match at Florida State will be televised on ESPN3.com and is believed to be only the second time that the Titans will have appeared on a national broadcast in the history of the program. Fullerton's national television debut came on Oct. 25, 2006, when its home match against rival Long Beach State was shown on the Fox Soccer Channel.

VERSUS NO. 1: Cal State Fullerton has twice faced the No. 1 team in the nation since the 2001 season, falling to top-ranked Portland (L, 2-1) at the Husky Nike Invitational in Seattle in 2007 and top-ranked UCLA (L, 3-1) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that same season in Westwood, Calif.

VERSUS RANKED TEAMS: Since the 2001 season, Cal State Fullerton is just 8-25-3 (.264) against ranked opposition, having lost their last three meetings against nationally ranked squads… the Titans last met a ranked squad on Oct. 9, 2011, falling to rival Long Beach State by a 2-1 score in overtime after losing the lead with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation… Fullerton's last win over a ranked team came on Sept. 5, 2010, when the Titans defeated then-No. 18 UNC Greensboro by a 2-0 score at home… under the direction of Head Coach Demian Brown, the Titans are 4-12 against nationally ranked teams since he assumed control of the program in 2007.

FLORIDA STATE BRIEFLY: The Seminoles are a perfect 4-0 overall on the season with wins over Minnesota, #9 Central Florida, #22 Florida, and the College of Charleston… Florida State has not allowed a goal since the seventh minute of its season opener against the Golden Gophers -- a span of 353:28 -- coming from behind to defeat Minnesota, 3-2, after allowing two goals in the first 6:32… the Seminoles have outscored the opposition by a 9-2 count, scoring nine unanswered goals since the opener… Tiffany McCarty, Dagny Brynjarsdottir, and Kristen Grubka have each scored twice and added an assist apiece to co-lead the team with five points… Nine different Seminoles have tallied at least one point… Kelsey Wys has started all four matches in net, posting a 0.55 goals against average and 13 saves.

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH THE SEMINOLES: Friday's match against Florida State will be the first in the history of the two programs.

CREIGHTON BRIEFLY: The Bluejays enter the weekend with a 1-4-1 overall record with a match-up against in-state rival Nebraska Omaha on Friday before heading to California… Creighton has lost its last two matches to Kansas and Arizona after gaining its first victory of the season over South Dakota on Aug. 28… senior Sarah Kendall and freshman Alyssa Jara lead the team with four points apiece -- Kendall scoring twice and Jara notching a goal and a pair of assists… senior Katie Jo Swanson has played every second in goal this season for the Bluejays, posting a 2.08 goals against average to go with 40 saves… Creighton has been outscored, 13-6, this season, but has scored one goal or fewer in five of its six matches in 2012.

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH THE BLUEJAYS: The two schools have met just once in the history of the two programs with Creighton handing Cal State Fullerton a 3-0 defeat in Omaha in 2010.

CONFERENCE CALL: Friday's match will be just the fourth meeting with an ACC school under the league's current alignment, going 1-0 against Clemson, and 0-1 against Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest… Fullerton is winless in two tries against the Missouri Valley Conference, with losses to Creighton (2010) and Illinois State (1998).

"O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!": Seniors Stacey Fox, Jennifer Smith, and JeAnne Mazeau, along with sophomore Chelsey Patterson, have been selected as captains for the 2012 season.

FOX ROX: Senior Stacey Fox has been on quite a tear offensively, scoring a goal in each of the Titans' last three matches and leading the team thus far this season in both goals (3) and points (7) while ranking tied for second in shots (16). The Simi Valley native ranks ninth in school history with 16 career goals scored -- one of only 17 players in the history of the program to reach double digits in goals -- and also stands 10th all time in points (36) and tied for 10th in shots (90). Her 0.29 goals per match entering the weekend is eighth all time while her four career game-winning goals are tied for 10th.

MISSING IT BY *THIS* MUCH: All five of Cal State Fullerton's matches this season have been decided by a single goal while three of its four losses have come via a 2-1 score -- two of those in overtime. The Titans have been outscored, 9-6, this season, but they have yet to be shutout in five contests thus far.

AWW, SHOOT!: Fullerton may be just 1-4 thus far this season, but it isn't from a lack of effort on the offensive end. The Titans rank atop the Big West Conference entering the week with 83 shots overall and an average of 16.6 shots per match while three players (sophomore Rebecca Wilson, senior Stacey Fox, and senior Ann Marie Tangorra) rank among the top three individually. Cal State Fullerton has outshot the opposition, 83-64, this season, posting a season-high 22 shots in its last outing against No. 21 Oregon State (outshooting the Beavers, 22-4, for the match) and having two other matches with at least 19 shots.

A-MAZEAU-ING: Junior Erica Mazeau is here to help. Entering the season with just one assist in her first two seasons combined, the Yorba Linda native has opened the floodgates in 2012, notching an assist in three of the team's last four matches and standing in a three-way tie for first in the Big West Conference in the category.

OOOOOOVVVEERRRTIME: A change of scenery certainly didn't do anything to change Fullerton's fortunes when it came to overtime as the Titans suffered yet another 2-1 extra-time setback at Michigan on Aug. 24. Fullerton, which tied an NCAA record with 11 overtime contests in 2011 (4-4-3 in those games), has now played 31 overtime matches over a span of 104 total games in Head Coach Demian Brown's five-plus seasons at the helm.
