Edberg Shoots 3-Under as Titans Finish Fourth at New Mexico State Invitational

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sophomore Martina Edberg became the second golfer in as many days to record a 4-under 69 as Cal State Fullerton finished fourth at the New Mexico State Invitational Wednesday at the N.M. State Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.

Edberg tied the school record for the best individual round after recording a 3-under 69 on Wednesday, the second time she's recorded that score in her career and second straight season the sophomore has shot a 69 at the N.M. State Golf Course. Edberg recorded a 3-under 69 in the third round of the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate last year hosted by New Mexico State; a tournament in which Cal State Fullerton finished third.

Edberg's 3-under helped her finish in a tie for fifth place on Wednesday, recording a 4-under 212 for the tournament. Edberg recorded five birdies in the final round and concluded the tournament nine. She was tied for second in the 81-player field with 40 pars over 54 holes of play.

Teammate Tisha Alyn Abrea, who also tied the school record in the second round, finished off the three-day tournament with a 2-under 70 in round three to also finish the tournament tied for fifth place after carding a 4-under 212. Abrea dominated the par-5's at the N.M. State Golf Course over the three days, leading the field with a 4.17 scoring average, shooting 10-under on those holes.

As for the Titans, the team posted a collective 7-over 871 at the 54-hole event. The team posted a 2-over 290 in round three, which ranks as the fourth best single team round score in the program's history. The Titans finished fourth overall, falling one spot shy of the third-place finish they recorded at the same tournament last year. The Titans were three strokes behind the host Aggies for third place. Idaho won the tournament with a 14-under 850,  which led wire-to-wire and finished 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Boise State. 

Senior Makayla Mier scored her second consecutive top-20 finish and seventh of her Titans career after finishing the tournament in a tie for 15th place with a 2-over 218. Mier shot a 3-over 75 in round three with two more birdies to give her 11 for the tournament, which tied for sixth in the field. She also posted a 3.93 scoring average on par-4's and shot a collective 2-under on those holes, the fourth best mark in the tournament.

Junior Dakota Brown rounded out the Titans scoring after posting a 4-over 76 in round three, her best score of the tournament. She recorded 15 pars on the day.

Competing as an individual, junior Nadine Rivera recorded a 10-over 82 to finish in a tie for 77th place with a collective score of 246 over the three days.

The Titans return to the links on Oct. 21 for the final tournament of the fall portion of the 2014-15 schedule when they travel to Wahiawa, Hawaii for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at Leilehua Golf Course.
